portuguese m1887 mauser

Hey, I'm looking for some suggestions. As the title suggests i have a Portuguese mauser in 8x60r kropatchek. no surprise the barrel looks like a sewer pipe. I'd like to get it rebarreled in something a little less rare and expensive. I'm thinking 38-55, i also thought of 45-70 but i'm pretty sure id have to carve out the stock to fit the barrel, any other suggestions?

Go for anything the base size of the Kropatchek cartridge. Don't have the size in front of me, but at least you won't have to mess with the bolt face too much then.

A few questions before you start carving up an irreplaceable 134-year-old rifle......

How bad is the bore..... really? Can you give us a photo?

Have you thought about electrolysis for the bore? I have seen some am-az-ing improvements from "burnt-out, corroded" barrels.

Once you have the brass, handloading your own ammo can get you down as low as $3 a box for shells.

Brass IS available...... OR you can use 8mm Lebel brass (available from Trade-Ex and some others) for a short-neck version. Just be careful regarding the dish-profile of the bolt-face; some brass requires a BEVEL on that rim.

Bullets are really hard to find...... but SO easy to make. Just get a Lee .329 mould and size 'em down to .326.
