Hello all,
I recently purchased a SW M&P 9 (with the mag disconnect safety) and think i might have an issue with it, I'm hoping other owners can let me know if this is normal or not.

When i finish a magazine the slide locks back as it should, i take out the spent mag and replace it with a fresh one... To release the slide i have to press the mag release button... with other guns I'm able to pull the slide back slightly and let go to release the slide ( Aka slingshot)... Is the M&P9 designed to only release the slide when the slide release button is pressed?

Seat the mag with a sharp blow and it'll release the slide like many other semi's can do. Bit of a timesaver...

That's curious....the main complaint re: the S&W M&P's was that it was almost impossible to release the slide using the slide release.....you had to sling-shot it. This is opposite to what you're experiencing.

yeah i know! just my luck.. sounds like a bug... i went to the place that i purchased it and the clerk looked at me like i was from mars.. he uses the slide release button exclusively and doesn't believe there is an issue. My plan is to take to the range once more time and have a more experienced shooter take a crack at it.. i don't feel its operator error, but ya never know... I'ts possible that i was not "slamming" the new mag in....

Fully loaded M&P mags always feel like they're not fully seated, I'm wondering if yours are holding the slide release in place? What colour followers do you have?

Ian thanks for the reply.
i don't believe I'm holding the slide release button in place.. my hands aren't big enough.

I'm sorry, what exactly are followers on a handgun?

(magazine) follower is the plastic peice that sits on the magazine spring...

To release the slide i have to press the mag release button...
I'm a little confused...do you actually mean magazine release button? so how goes it work? you can't close the slide untill you remove the magazine, than how do you chamber the round?

if you mean you can't slingshot, and have to use the slide release button, maybe you just need to pull a little farther back...? dunno I don't have that problem with mine

thanks.. just looked at my mags without disassabliming them.. they are both black

this is right i can NOT sling shot, and i have to use side release button. i've pulled as far back as possible.

OK, can you slingshot with OUT the magazine in the gun? does it metter how many round you have in the magazine? - I'd check that first.

btw when you pull the slide back does mags release button lower a little (it won't be much but you should be able to tell kind like you insert an empty magazine the release button lifts up)?

By any chance are you trying this with empty magazines? An empty mag will lock open the slide and sling shotting won't work. Slingshotting should work with a loaded mag.

John Smith - you are not trying to slingshot a gun with an empty mag, are you? Just want to make sure. Also, does your gun slingshot with no mag in?

EDIT: sounds like krausb beat me to it.

if i start with NO mag in the gun, and pull back on the slide and push the slide release button UP, it locks in place as it should... at that point the only way to release the slide is to press teh button, slingshot doesn't work.. i went into the shop and tried to do the same with the store model and had the same results.

i've only tried with 10 cartilages each time... i'll try with 9 tomorrow.
I don't know if the release button lowers a little.. i dont think so... i've watched other people and noticed that it went down... i'll check that too...

if anyone is going to the poco range in bc tomorrow pm me, you might get to shoot couple of mags worth of ammo out of my firearm for nothing! :)

the mag is full.. my gun does not slingshot when no magis in the gun.

Sound like slide release spring is messed up!

Try this, take the slide off and lift/move the slide release up and see if it lowers down by itself. (it should be under light spring tension)

Hi guys... well i took it to the range today..and looks like this was a case of user error.. After i slapped in a new mag hard, and really pulled back on the slide it did release. More often then not i had to pull on the slide a couple of times to get it to release... thanks everyone for your input!
