My brother and law and I recently stumbled upon an old crate buried in his parents barn. It has the appearance of something that might have one been used to store guns. I was wondering if you guys could help decipher some of the markings on it.

CHEST S.A. AUST. NO.1 MK.2

BAA0403 SI...(The rest of this part has been scratched off)

Anyone know what it could mean? I'll try and get the pics up soon, I'm just having trouble figuring out how to get them off my Blackberry.

Rather than waiting for an answer here, go tear up the whole barn and see if you can find any hidden gun & grenade.

If it is wood with a metal top, has rope handles on each end, is about 40 inches by 18 x 16 it is a rifle chest for Australian arms. Many sporterized Lee Enfield rifles were shipped from England to Canada for retail sale in the 50's and 60's in these chests.....

I had a crate that sounded identical. The metal lid was just sheet metal over wood. My crate was for the no4 rifle. Very likely they would have had similar crates for the no1mk3.

There used to be a number of these crates at the Princess Auto yard in Winnipeg left over from when they used to sell surplus rifles.
