I have a Savage 1899A in 303 Savage that I am considering rebuilding. My local gunsmith says it is safe and the barrel is in shootable condition. I have some loads my uncle gave me; I did not trust them so, I used a kinetic bullet puller and dismantled them down to the basic brass.

I was about to order a set of 303 Savage dies when I thought about what I need. The cases a resized, I think all I need to do is seat the bullet and crimp it. Could a 30/30 seating die do this to test the gun, or should I bite the bullet and buy the dies before I know if it will shoot or not? I am not looking for a target rifle, but I want to make sure she is not keyholing or patterning instead of grouping.

Why would you not shoot the original shells you had for it?
Your gunsmith said the gun was safe and the ammunition was designed for the rifle.

he says he has some loads his uncle gave him, never said if that were factory or reloads. personally i wouldnt shoot reloads that some one gave me either if i had no idea about the history of them... example: maybe his uncle had a few drinks and stuffed some hand gun powder in there by accident.
 
H4831, the OAL varied wildly. When I puleld them apart, they had different bullet weights and styles also. I was trying to be nice to my uncle by not saying anything.

James54765, no company has made 303 Savage ammo for years. If you find a box of it on CGN, people want $40-$60 for it and you do not know how old it is.
 
To answer your question ...........Yes your 30-30 seater dies will load it perfectly. You will likely have to size the necks again as they will probably have lost their tension. Your 30-30 dies will not do this as they are .020 smaller at the web, but if you have 308 or 300 sav dies they will work fine to neck size part of the neck to get the tension you need.
