So ... I was just thinking to myself:

Being that it has zero interchangeable parts with an AK, is it possible? Or a pipe dream?

Nedved is already non restricted it is SVDs upper class brother. However they tend be expensive and only handfull in Canada

It could go from prohibited to................double secret prohibited!

But seriously, not a snowballs chance in hell with the Lieberals at the helm.

Yeah those Medved were some ugly looking things,I remember. Weren't they like 3k and in 308?

Pipe dream, Its in OIC. AK variant, due to similar controls as ak47. Thus prohib.

Was that the basis for the "variant" status? Similar controls? Why didn't they give Valmet the same status then?

I think your best hope would be to build a clone out of a SVT 40, or Valmet, ... or maybe someday some enterprising gun company or entrepreneur will design and develop a Canadian equivalent of the SVD. Like the ATR Varmint is to the AR-15.

Hey :) What does it look like buddy? Ive never seen one

It's Medved, Nedved is a retired footballer lol

Medved Nedved Niedzwiedz, Miedwiec all the same word, comes from ancient Aryan Indo-European meaning honey eater but to us mode people it means Bear.

The only down side of the honey eater is single row magazine and odd size pre SVD rail scope mounting otherwise it is an excellent rifle. In accuracy department when with optic it shoots even better then SVD

I've been tempted to build an SVD clone from a .308 Valmet Hunter. May still, at some point. Valmets are fun!

Because Valmet is commercial rifle, which is main name "Hunter" meant for civilians. While SVD is military rifle and its sole purpose is to kill soldiers, not animals. There is no logic behind it, that's why they OICed SVD to prevent further modifications or renaming.

That doesn't explain why the M78 was given a pass by name as well.

All the other valmets are named as well. Not just variants.

Politicians declared the following AKs, and guns they figured were AK like as banned by name. They also noted that variants of these guns are also banned. The svd is listed by name on this list. The Valmet Hunter and Valmet M78 are given exceptions, but not all M78 models are included as noted at the bottom of the list.

As a side note, I don't think we have that many SVDs in the country in possession of 12.x holders. So even it becomes de-prohibited it doesn't mean it will suddenly become available at anything less than 10k :p

If it was removed from the 12 (x) oic then private companies could produce them or import them from the US. There are companies making svd type guns still.
