Post All Your Winchesters And Lever Arms Here

A check of the Polishing Room Records with the Cody Museum will likely show that rifle was actually manufactured around 1903 - ish. Remember, George Madis' s/ns are off for this time period of the Model 1894 as well as a few other models.

Very nice gun.

1899,

Yes, s/n for many of the years in both of those are indeed wrong, as are all works that are based on Madis' work. For all the great work he did (Madis is / was a legend in the Winchester world) some of his work was inaccurate. For the Model 1894 and the 1892, his early production numbers are high and then drop behind actual production. For almost all of the other models, his numbers are behind. I am unsure, as are most, as to how this happened. For example, I have a 38-55 which Madis dates to 1906, while the PRRs at Cody puts it at 1908. However, it is the opposite for later 2 1894s I own: I have an 1894 s/n 876902 which Madis dates to 1920 and which the PRR show actually dates to 1918, and another, s/n 933115 which Madis dates to 1923, though records show it was made in 1921.
If you're interested in more on this topic, check out the WACA forum, it's been discussed ad naueum there. Not a lot of people outside of the Winchester collecting world are aware of this discrepancy, but the good folks at Cody are trying to get the word out.

Cheers,
Matt

Here is one of the levers that reside in my safe.

It is a 30-30. Little gray, but we will all be like that at 96 years old. Wood is mint for the age. I think this old girl has supplied supper for a lot of folk. Sure would be nice if they could talk!

First Savage I've seen with a saddle ring!...that is a very nice looking gun. Too bad a fellow didn't see more of those around.

Cheers,

Matt

Yeah, I bet you do. Any idea what the production numbers were like for saddle rings? That's the first I've seen. Wouldn't mind finding myself one someday if I can stop buying Winchesters.
Yes, it's a darn shame we've lost so much of our shooting / hunting history to the South. I've had a couple offers from some fellows I know in the US, but won't let them head that way. Great guys, and nothing against Americans (I lived there a couple years myself, and my brother in law is Texan), but it just kills me to see us losing our heritage like that.

Matt,

I have no idea on the numbers, but they were produced from 1899 - 1919. This one is a 1914, so they are out there you just have to find them! This is not the first or the last that I have seen. Just the best for my collection. I needed to have at least 1 30-30 and I can't think of a nicer example. By the way I am talking about a strictly savage lever action collection.

I am ashamed to admit it, but I sold some rifles south of the border before I found out about CGN. I haven't done that since though. Maybe I will write the cody museum and see what they say. Any tips on finding a period correct tang sight?

99Trix,

Yeah, like anything else I guess, you just have to find them. Does that mean hens teeth are out there too and if I look just hard enough, I might find one? Hmmm...If you ever see another and you think you don't "need" it, let a fellow know!
P.S. Rear sight looks great on my rifle!

1899: To get info from Cody, you can get factory letters, though for non-members they are $60 ...it is cheaper if you're a member like me, $35...I could get you one). That's a lot to pay though unles your really into this stuff. Or you can join the museum and get 40 free serial number searchs, the discounted factory letters, and additional goodies. As for Lyman tangs, you can buy new that will fit (check Ebay, plenty on there!), or find an original Lyman or Marbles on Ebay or at a gunshow, they seem to start around $125, repros are certainly cheaper. For your model you would want a Lyman coded DA or Marbles W1.

Cheers,
Matt
