With spain and italy hit so hard what do you think will happen to the gun market? Obvilously the big names will stand the storm but many smaller companies may not. How do you think this will affect market price and demand? Obviously our dollar has tanked so new imports will cost more. Will quality drop as most fight to get product out the door when they start back up with a possible new work force? I ask because i was planning on being in the market for more italian and spanish guns in the next year or 2. Now my timeline may be altered but id still like a new fitted gun built for me

Good question. I think the guns you cited may see production slow downs. Who knows what may happen in Spain. Their gun industry always seems to be on the verge of collapse.

One thing we may see is anything made in China will take off. There will be a race to get economies up and running first. If the Chinese recover before the rest of the world, which appears likely, they will become very rich and powerful.

A global recession or depression will reduce demand for custom shotguns. You may get a sweet deal on a custom Italian gun. The only custom gun I own was ordered when the Canadian dollar was worth more than the US dollar. I think I would have to pass now with the current exchange.

I could be wrong but I think the opposite will happen. And I say that as someone who has been having product made in China since the 1980s. I think this whole thing may be the catalyst that turns Western markets away from China and away from the ideal of unfettered free trade. Trump may have been a bit prescient with Fortress America 4 years ago.

I personally don’t want nothing from there right now and Other peers of mine have the same thought.

You may be right at least for core products

I think that rebuilding a healthy economy will take significant time, and as a result, disposable income for the shooting sports will be more limited.
There are going to be many businesses that do not survive this debacle.
As a nation, we are responsible for our utter lack of preparedness for a pandemic, We were warned, but did not pay attention, consumed by petty politics and petty politicians.

While I think that we are experiencing some serious hardships as a result of our outsourcing much of our manufacturing, people do not learn well from history.
As Canadians, we should be as wary of our dependence on the US, in addition to our wariness of China. China is not our friend, and the US, I'm not so sure.

The Spanish gun industry was almost dead, and the Italian industry was outsourcing before this emergency. The dominance of major Italian firms is likely to continue. They have the capital.

Some Turkish makers are capable of excellent work. The Turkish "brand" has to recover from its shoddy beginnings. It remains to be seen if Turkey can emerge from its dictatorship and take its place as a reliable economic/political partner in the world.

Pretty much agree
As a yank and I never thought I would say this but no the US under Trump is sure not our friend in Canada which is sad
That being said I think with him in charge it is time for canada to strike back and not keep trying to pussy foot all around him
Fine no masks then no canadian pulp to make them and no more canadian nurses working in your US hospitals
Only thing this idiot may understand
Take care

Myself I prefer not to jump upon the hate Trump bandwagon. If Obama was still in charge do you really believe he would act much different regards to hoarding medical supplies? This is a global crisis and it's natural to protect one's own.

And if HRC had somehow won the last election North America would be a terrible place to live. She killed Khaddaffi and pretty much bragged about it.
America had its bumps with him in the past but carpet bombing that country totally uncalled for and now it's another conduit for illegal entry into Europe.

We will source our own masks preferably by domestic manufacture. It's the simplest of materials for PPE.
My two bits.

While I agree with you for the most part, our present prime minister is still a big fan of the Chinese and he will make sure that their products are at least available to Canadians even if they don't want to purchase them. And as long as the prices are cheap then most Canadians will still purchase them. The American president, for all of his shortcomings, at least "gets" the notion that they need to reduce the countries reliance on china, a concept that is totally lost on our absentee leader.

For any of the gun manufacturers to survive, there first needs to be a market for the product. The economies have to get running again after the virus has run it's course, fortunately for the gun makers, the US was in a strong economy and will probably recover to be strong again. Canada is such a tiny gun customer that the fact we've been in a recession for the last 5 years and will be for the foreseeable future isn't going to matter much to the gun manufacturers. The European gun market is a bit harder to predict as they're more bogged down in political correctness and legislation than we are and the economies aren't very good for the most part but there's still a lot of old money around.
I can see where the Spanish gun manufacturers will be a shadow of their former selves.
The Italians have been hard hit in the gun making regions and some smaller manufacturers won't survive but the industry will regain traction over time.
The Chinese and Turkish gun manufacturers will still have customers as long as the prices are kept down.

I really dont think the demand for custom guns will go down with the virus. Maybe with an aging population but those who can afford a custom fitted gun will likely still have a disposable income when this is said on done. Others like me that are willing to sacrafice and save it will make it harder but the desire wont go away
I just hope there will be an industry left to retrain the next generation. My 40 year old gift may just become a 45 year old gift to myself.

Or i find myself a nice high grade gun here and find a suitable stock maker
Only time will tell i guess

Yes I do as does many americans including my two brothers still living there. Making them in canada long term is not the issue today having them is
I hope this was a real eye opener for canada with respect to US relations and I am a yank and embarrassed right now to say that

Our relationship with China was built by Canadian consumers chasing the lowest price long before our current Prime Minister arrived on the scene. Do you think Walmart and Canadian Tire parking lots will be empty when this Covid issue is over ? North America’s sold their manufacturing capability to Asia decades ago one cheap item at a time.

As far as Turkey, they are slowly moving into a higher quality gun market. They just need to prove they can compete with the medium price range buyers that now but Browning and Beretta.

Where did I say anything about Wallmart and Can Tire parking lots going to be empty? If you'll take the time to re-read my comments you'll see that I said Canadians will continue to purchase Chinese products as long as they are cheap.
