Thanks Brutus
Good to know. I got a Lyman manual coming in the mail ... I will be reading up on some options. I had not thought about the .307 ... I will have to see what load offerings are listed for it and see if there's something close.
Thanks
Went through some manuals here - that 170 grain Sierra - looks like B.C. is about .248, if between 1,800 and 2,400 fps (Sierra) And Sierra seems to show max for that bullet in 30/30 about 2,150 at the muzzle. Seems, based on 165 and 168 grain loading for 308 Win, probably can safely get 2,700 for that bullet from 308 Win. With that B.C. at 2,700 fps muzzle, will be 2,349 fps at 100 yards; 2,036 fps at 200 yards. (Nosler table) So, whatever results that you get with that bullet from 30/30 (max loading), will get same results about 150 to 175 yards further out with the 308 Win (max loading). Same speed, same point of impact, should perform the same, just 150 to 175 yards further away. So many better choices for 308 Win for 200-300 yard shots - except, if you have them already, no cost!
I have loaded 170gr flat nose .30-30 bullets in .300 Savage. Very effective on caribou.
And in the .303 Savage.
Hi PotashminerOP - from Lyman #49 manual - they show 170 grain CAST bullets (not jacketed) to 2,456 fps in Tiriaq's 300 Savage. Those cast bullet data are probably not useful for jacket bullets!!! They do not list mbogo3's .303 Savage at all. Went back to Speer #5 Manual (1961) - they do not list .303 Savage either.
I have loaded .30-30 170gr bullets in .303 Savage. Work fine. Cannelure groove was in the wrong spot, but that didn't matter.
Don't know what make of flat nosed 170s I had. Bulk purchase, very modest ogive, prominent flat point. Might have been surplus Gevelot bullets.
I suspect most any lower end load for 180gr bullet in .308 would be just fine with these 170gr. .30-30 bullets. They might impact quite violently with top .308 loads, but that could be speculation. I don't know that I would lose much sleep worrying about it.
