Well the stock for my 7.62 P14 finally arrived. I had wanted one with a blind mag well as it will only be single shot and the barrel channel is so very skinny, apart from that it looks really attractive and will save me butchering the Mauser stock given to me by a dealer.
I like the vents in the forend and the way that when I open up the barrel channel they will vent right through. I wish the sporter butt for my SMLE was in the same package but I can wait a bit longer!
Any ideas of the simplest and none power tool way to open the channel without making a real mess. My router packed up when I was making trophy shields for skull mounts and I dont consider myself that good enough to have used it anyway as the sides arent vertically straight!
I'll do the channelling work before thinking about sealing and bedding!

I've opened that style of stock out. I just laid the barrelled action in place, and traced the barrel onto the forend. Used a chisel and mallet to outline the new wider channel, and then just started shaving. I have a set of barrel inletting cutters which make it easier, but you can just rough the channel out with chisels and mallet working from the top down, with a sweep toward the bottom, until enough wood has been removed to allow sandpaper wrapped around a dowel to be used. The router wouldn't be much help. Don't know if you have access to Stanley Surform brand sheet steel rasps, but the blade section from a round one, with a handle mounted at 90 degrees, is useful.

Great I'll have a look around the DIY stores tomorrow morning after walking the dogs. Just got back from a guest day on a pheasant shoot. Great fun despite torrential style rain. My springers did me proud and curry lunch afterwards was well recieved!
