Mornin', Carlos - apropos the thread about laminated stocks - thought you might like to see the only one that I have. The little rifle is a BSA Martini International MkII, and it was bought new in 1967 by a target rifle shooter in Northampton. After winning the county titles a few times, he got to thinking that he might do better with a one-piece stock. As you know, the MKII forend was bolted to the barrel.

He went to night-school for a year to study ergonomics, signed off, and sat down in his workshop with a action, a pencil and a few pieces of off-cut plywood from a local furniture maker.

Three weeks later, THIS was the result [top rifle]. He then won the nationals - four times - before retiring to grow older standing up and shooting handguns.

I bought the rifle off him about five years ago, for $100, including a very nice Parker-Hale target back-sight. He reckons that making the stock - the only one in the world like it - cost him about $30-40 in materials and glue. THAT was Devcon, and expensive stuff back in the 70's. The butt-plate is home-made, and the hand-stop and rail came off the original stock. The barrel is now fully-floating, and the action is bedded in Devcon - undoing the hex bolt in front of the trigger guard drops the whole action out in five seconds flat. It shoots raggedy holes at 50m with that x18 Tasco scope. I bought two of those unloved but optically superb Japanese optics scopes off GB for $350 for both of them, thinking that I was just buying one. I thought at first that it was a mistake by the vendor when I opened the box and found TWO, a x16 and the x18, so I emole him to ask which one he wanted back. His answer was a shoc k - 'where I'm going I won't need 'em, so you please shoot them in good health and think of me.'

I do, every time I look through them.

The bottom is another Mk11 - a true left-hander. That cost me $90, but it came with [takes deep breath[ -

1. A complete set of Al Freeland diopter tube sights in the later Unertl POSA alloy micrometer mounts.

2. A left-hand Parker-Hale target backsight.

3. A complete dealer's set of ten of each of every size Anschutz foresight element - total 140 pieces - I e***** most of them but I still have a few left - earned myself over $700 on them, too..

That, too, shoots very well and I use it when I get tired of shooting right-handed. The x18 Unertl came from the estate of our late gun-club secretary, Les Tittman. He took over as club secretary the same day I was born in 1946, and died in post, aged 89, in 2005.

Please feel free to post this - if only to show that a laminated stock need not cost almost $2000. Swissrifles or the rim-fire section of CGN, perhaps?

Both together on the old range just over a year ago...

A better view?
