Potassium nitrate AKA salpeter. Where to find some in Quebec

Hello,

I am looking for nitrate potassium historically know as salpeter for making slow match. I use it for my matchlock musket. Some 20 years ago, in Quebec, one could pick some on the shelves of the local pharmacy. 10 years from now, you had to ask at the prescription counter. Now the young pharmacist is baffled by my request. He was wondering if I want to make fireworks or fertilizer.

Does someone have suggestion for a retailer? The places where they sell chemicals to school and colleges would not sell to invididuals.

Used to be able to buy it at "Farm & Garden" stores. It was sold as "stump remover". It was used to accelerate the rotting of a tree stump.
I bought a 25 kg bag of it at one of these places about 15 years ago - maybe no more though ?

Home Hardware sells it as stump remover..probably around 20$ a pound, i forget how big the container is. It's called stump remover. I used it in my hot caustic blueing

Yup you can buy it in that form just not in the little bottles marked salt peter you use to buy at the pharmacy or at the chemical distributors

That will get you a spot on a government watch list but I guess half of us here are on it already

I believe it's also used as a meat preservative. Might be able to track some down through butchers or smokers supplies.

It was added several years ago to a controlled list of goods under the title "explosive precursors". Unless something has changed you don't need a permit to buy it, but the seller is obligated to record who you are, how much you bought, and for what purpose.

Most retailers can't be bothered with regulations like that, so rather than comply, they simply stop selling it.
