Potentially dangerous Lyman 1200 tumbler issue.

My Lyman 1200 tumbler has been acting up lately, not turning on when it was supposed to. I figured that it would be the on/off switch since it is around 20 years old. I was almost literally shocked when I noticed the cord had worn almost half way through where it goes through the lower housing. I am not upset with Lyman as this tumbler has literally cleaned tons of brass, I am just putting this up so other users of older tumblers can check for this possible problem.

Hmm, I've seen that happen on many appliances. You would think that on something that generates such movement that they would at least put a rubber tension relief standoff on it. When that happens to me I usually replace the wire but when I'm feeling lazy a generous blob of hot glue or silicone works just fine. Just make sure you don't have any stray strands of wires crossing each other before blobbing it! Certainly contact the manufacturer with the pics too.
 
Good catch.

You can probably take apart the base to cut and solder the wires together. Just make sure you grommet or round off the opening so it doesn't happen again.

I'm surprised yours has an on/off switch. I have an old (at least 30 years) 1200 that is still running great but has no on/off switch. About 1 1/2 years ago I bought a new 2500 and it doesn't have an on/off switch either.
 
Your missing this in the hole to protect the cord!

It probably did have one 20 years ago like you guys said but 20 years of use took it's toll on it I guess.
 
I checked mine and the protective grommet was missing. The cord wasn't damaged yet so I just had to replace the grommet.
I took an inch of 3/8" clear tubing (left over fuel line from another project) sliced it down the side and wrapped it around the cord. Slid it neatly into the hole the cord goes through and tightened it with some small tie straps. I will check it over the next couple of weeks but I suspect it will be fine. Took two minutes.
