Powder advice

Howzit Alan, I think we may have chatted via PM on Gunsite SA.

Check some loading data sources like Hogdon's online data and see what powders suit your cartridges, the advice above is solid. There is definitely a larger variety here than you are used with Somchem but the last few years have seen a very diminished supply and available variety. It's seems to be improving a bit now, especially for rifle powders.

IMR 7828 is very good in the 7mm Rem. RL25 is also very good, although harder to find. For the 375, W760 is very good and W760 is also v Good with 125-130 gr bullets in the 260. That may help keeping the number of powders you need to a minimum. RL 19 is also V good in the 260 with 140 gr bullets. As already mentioned pick up a couple newer manuals and do some reading.

Hey guys. Thanks, I did see the stickies but was hoping for rule of thumb if you could say that. In our powders the number tells you a lot. The first number tells you if it's ball or extruded, then the higher the set of numbers that follow the slower burning the powder. Do the names and numbers have that sort of signigance here?
If it helps, I'm looking at loads for 260 REM, wanna shoot 130gr or possibly heavier at longer ranges, so medium slow powder?
7mm REM mag with 168gr bullets for hunting power on big game, slow powder? 375h&h with 300gr for thumping things hard. Med fast powder?

Hi guys,

As a newb to Canada, I was hoping some of you could give me a crash course on the reloading powder options.
In south Africa we have only manufacturer with few flavours in terms of burn rate. I knew where each stood in terms of speed and suitability for different cartridges. Now I find myself overwhelmed by so many different options in brand and burn.
If you could help guide me so I can understand.
Thanks.

Get on Hodgdon's reloading data website and start looking at some loads. You will figure it out pretty fast.

Seconded! The Hodgdon family of powders is the most commonly available around these parts so it's great that they put their information online as a free reloading data source.

It's been my experience that the burn rate of the powder matters more to the bullet and peak pressure and very little to what my shoulder feels. But I've not shot a wide range of rifle cartridges.
