Which would give more velocity out of a 22" barrel? A 17 Fireball with H4198 or H335 pushing a 20gr V-Max. Supposedly Cooper uses 20gr of H335 for their hand loads.

Dumb question but...I assume less pressure is better as it would allow you to load a little hotter for an increase in velocity?

Whichever powder makes more velocity in a 26" barrel will also make more velocity in your 22" barrel, assuming both powders are loaded to standard pressures (no squib loads, etc).

More pressure makes more velocity. Notice that I'm not referring to peak pressure, but total pressure over the length of the bore. All the powder is consumed within the first couple of inches of bore length, after that it's just expanding gases that push the bullet.

Speed is about the same. H4198 is a cleaner burning power. If it was me, i would start with that one and see if I could get good accuracy.

But, if i was going to throw the powder charges, and not weigh each one, i would go withthe 335 (a ball powder).

Thanks for the replys. I think I'm just going to use Benchmark as it's what I have on hand.
