So I was shooting my new CZ 550 varmint and I had made up some hand loads for it. I put through some factory Remington and Hornady ammo through it first and cleaned it out, didn't noticed carbon residue on the brass after firing. After firing the handloaded rounds I noticed something weird about the brass when I ejected them. They all had carbon residue on the case neck. Using Varget and Vihtauvori N-135. cases were trimmed to 2.005. using federal primers, 168 gr SMK at varying OAL's, different batch's of 5. here's a picture of 3 cases.
right to left:
Factory Remington 150gr FMJ-- Factory Hornady SST 150gr -- Hand loaded Remington brass with SMK 168
@2.006 @ 2.007 @2.005

Is this because of the resizing? I full length resized these cases (range brass), tumbled them for about 5 hours. Reamed the edges after trimming.
Rem-- Horn-- HL
pre fired the necks measured (at the opening): .3375-- .3395-- .339
post firing the necks measured (at the opeining): .3465-- .3465-- .345

Any ideas?

Here's a little trick. :)

When you are at the range, shooting your groups, as you eject the fired case,
you can inspect the case.

At that time, if you have a small wad of fine steel wool, you just wipe that carbon right off the neck area.
Makes inspection easier, and your cases are clean for the next sizing/reloading.

Also, the carbon is much easier to remove right after firing than it is 3 or 4 hours later.
