I am looking at getting some powder to load up my 270 and 300 win mag. I was thinking of getting h4831sc to load for both. The 270 has a 22" barrel and the 300 WM has a 24" barrel, so both are about 2" shorter than then "normal" barrel length for each cartridge. I think either way the 4831sc will be best for the 300, but would H4350 work better in the 270 since the barrel is a little shorter? Or will 4831sc do just fine?

Hello I use mostly H- 4831 sc in my Ruger m77 m2 22 inch factory length barrell and 130 grn Nosler partitions and works great. Every 270 that I have own, shot well with h-4831. As for the 300 imr 4350 works well as h-4350.

It is almost universally true that the powder that gives the highest velocity in a 24 or 26 inch test barrel will give the highest velocity in shorter barrels too. There may be a limit to how short you can go with that rule, but it is true for all practical barrel lengths. There will be some velocity loss, but it will be almost the same loss for all powders. The bottom line - use the powders that the books say give the velocities you want and ignore barrel length as a factor in the choice.
