Powder for the 45-70

Thanks for all the comments on the powders from you guys.
Johnn Peterson once sent me the Aug-Sept, 2007 issue of Handloader magazine. This issue reports on a tremendous amount of testing, of many different bullets, powders and pressure ranges, for the 1895 marlin 45-70.
Brian Pearce, the tester, states that among his favourite accuracy powders are, H322, H4895, Varget and H4198. These are all Hodgdon powders, but I don't think he is biased, as he has good words for several others.

I don't have any information on light loads with cast bullets but I have shot a lot of 45/70 jacketed bullet loads in four different 45/70's. These rifles include: TCR-87 - 20" barrel, Browning 1886 - 26" barrel, TC Encore - 24" barrel and a Marlin 1895G - 18.5" barrel.

My favorite powder for both speed, accuracy and low pressure indications is AA2015. I am finding it difficult to obtain this powder as of late. Second choice would be H322.

Beleive it or not Remington 300 HP's have been amazingly accurate in all of these rifles.

The only plinking load I tried myself is the well known "The Load" of 13.0 grains of Red Dot powder. I used Idaho Territory 405 grain cast lead PB. Shot about like a 357 in noise and recoil. However this was before I had optics on my rifle, and the deviation from POI for "normal" handloads was considerable.

I was shooting my 22" T/C Contender carbine Friday my favorite load for this gun is 54grs H322 + 325gr Hornady FTX recoil is stout but very bearable then I switched to my 48gr H322 + 430gr WFNGC's forgetting how much these loads recoil compared to the 325gr loads.

I have a 2-7X Redfield scope on this rifle and yes I am now wearing a nice little cut over my eyebrow...
