Powder jumping out while cycling progressive press

I'm just starting out with a progressive press (Dillon 650) and I'm loading ~ 4.1gr of Titegroup into a 9mm case and topping it off with a 124gr MGB bullet. The case is not even half full of the small flake powder, yet no matter how smoothly I cycle the handle, one or two flakes of powder jump out of the case when it indexes to the next station.

Is this normal behaviour or is it just because the press is new and it will soften up in time? Do I maybe have the shell plate tightened down too much which is causing the index ball to pop into place a little too abrubtly or is the shell plate too lose which allows the plate to rock while it's indexing?

I'd love to hear from the experienced guru's!
 
You can try trimming the spring under the index ball. You can always cut more off, but you can't put any back, so be cautious.

Having the shell plate loose causes all sorts of problems, always make sure it's as tight as possible while still rotating smoothly and not binding. Never loosen it to fix something, you'll end up breaking something else.
 
Good suggestions Ape - thanks! I'll let you know how it turns out (although I may not get a chance to play around with it until the weekend).
 
Try to find another spring to experiment on. Most harware and modeling shops have a pretty good selection. That way if you bugger it up, the press isn't out of action.

That's the reason I've never been all that happy with any auto-index press I've tried. It just seems too rough.
 
+1 for the benos tips.

My 650 did that too and trimming the spring fixed it.

I can still get it to spill if I smash the thing up too fast, so as in most things, there is some technique involved too.
