powder measure question

What powder measure are you currently using and what powder/s are you having issues with?

I personally would not use a throw type dispenser to measure my loads precisely. I would however use it to under throw a load and then trickle up on a scale.

I only use chargemaster now for target rifle.
lee auto disk for semi auto 223 / pistol , throws on progressive.

I like the discs because I just note which disk I use and dont need to adjust anything. just switch the disk and good to go.
 
I like the Lee mesure, work well for me. I use a scale to calibrate ofc but after i drop charge and that's pretty much all. I may weight a charge every tenth cartridge to see if load stay consistent and they are very good. I do not reload maximum load either.

3031 is quite chunky (not sure about 4064) and therefore probably doesn't meter well in the thrower. Finer powders such as Varget, and ball powders (BL-C2 etc) meter much better but may not work for you're particular cartridge.

I have used a Lee thrower in the past for gopher rounds and I do know that you have to be consistent in how you use the lever. I used to click mine twice to the top to get the cylinder filled and then twice at the bottom to make sure everything came out. I have had the powder jam inside the loading cylinder and not put the proper charge into the case for that reason.
 
It's important to manipulate the handle exactly the same each time you throw a charge.Powder will settle in the cavity if you shake the measure between throws. Keep each throw the same.
 
ok guys heres what I got new lyman 55 with nocker, lee auto disc,and lee perfect measure!!!!!for powder...4895,,4320,,h4831sc,,,7625,,4064,,bl-c{2},,win 231,,3031,,hi skor700x,,hs-6,,leverevolution, I know some are for shotgun too but out of all of them which will work the best in those measures I got. I tried a few but I must be doing something wrong thanks for the info hound13
 
Ok ok...

- I found that the most consistent metering powder to be W748, a ball powder (by weight thrown). Which fits with other info I've found...

- IMR 3031, 4064, and 4895 (stick type powder) each at times need an extra little crunch to cut the powder granules sitting half in and out of the metering drum.

- Haven't tried a flake powder for a long time...

- Manipulating the measure's dispensing lever in the same manner every time is important, eh. Each 'knock' at the end of the throw has an effect on how the powder settles into the metering drum, heck that's the reason to throw and weigh ten measures of powder to see what your setting and style gives you, before engaging 'full production mode' :dancingbanana:

Just gotta add; I weigh each round's (rifle calibre, that is) allotment of powder, eh; I don't really rely on the level of accuracy a measure solely provides, and trickle up to my desired weight. Pistol, I'm much more relaxed about; no frickn waay I'm measuring each round, nope ain't gonna happen

With varget, imr 8208, and imr 4895 my lee measure gets within at most .3 grains every time. I throw light, then trickle up. Some throws are dead on. I've loaded 2000+ rounds with this measure so it is broken in and/or smoothed out. +1 for manipulating the lever consistently.
 
ive got myself a lee powder throw measure that came with my lee breechlock press, i found after i need to take them apart and trim off a piece of rubber plastic tip to get them to throw consistant with large powder flakes and varget extruded.
 
Ive just started loading and the 700x I used doesnt really meter well in a lee auto disc... from what ive learned so far, static electricity really messes up flake style powders. I hear ball style powder meters best. Ive also heard people having little tricks like attaching a vibrator to the powder measure to agitate the powder lol.
 
Ya, with the lee, I set around .3 gr light on purpose, the flick when I lower the handle, flick when I raise it, seems to get real close, then use a trickler with my scale to go up from there.

I have also used a 1500 charge master when I was learning to reload, it's an excellent setup, you surely need to let it run the whole cycle before taking your load as it will trickle and reweigh on its own. It's on my list for goodies to buy after the move to the new house and my new reloading room.
