Powder/primer supplies dwindling, what's your plan?

I'm pretty much planning on standardizing on:

9mm
44 mag
45ACP
223
7.62x39 (if I can ever find much brass, have a lot of surplus saved but it's kinda inaccurate)
308

I reload for a few hunting rifles as well (45/70, 300wsm atm), but don't shoot enough volume to really worry about that too much, I figure I'll either be able to find the odd pound of something that will work, or use something that I have and make do.

It's getting pretty bad around here for primers especially... I don't think we're going to get much of anything in Canada this year primer wise, and powder who knows. Allient has already pretty much disappeared. I've saved up about 25k primers of assorted types. I think next I'm going to buy a whack of powder, I have about 7lbs right now, and I'm thinking that it may be a good idea to buy powders in bulk that are going to work in many calibers. I'm thinking titegroup (should handle 9mm, 45 acp, and light loads in 44 mag), and then I'm not sure. Varget seems promising, but has some metering issues on a progressive, but it would cover 223 and 308. Not really sure.

Bullets I don't think will be so bad, or worst case I can cast all the pistol bullets. Hell, we make bullets in Canada. I have a good supply of brass in every caliber as well, other than 7.62x39. Bullets I will probably buy in bulk at some point too, but I think the priority for us in Canada is:

Primers>Powder>Brass>Bullets

Hey fasteel..........you will be the first to whine when stuff gets even harder to obtain.........why in the world would you ever criticize a shooter who is planning for a very likely shortage???

I've got enough to last 2 years right now, if I had to I could stretch it to 4. Obama will be a memory, and Ahnold will reopen the border. Hell, we'll be NAU there'll be no border anyway ;)

Seriously though, I see a lot more 22lr in the foreseeable future, just to keep costs reasonable.

Is this going to be like the last primer shortage about 10 years ago? It didn't even last a year and I think it was just caused by panic bulk buying by reloaders who would not normally buy thousands of primers at one time.

I don't know about primers/powder/bullets but Obama isn't allowing the US military to sell expended cases to reloaders or surplus dealers anymore. Supplies of non military cartridges, like the 300wsm or even the 30-06 may never be a problem. Military utilised cartridges are another matter altogether. Until the manufacturers can ramp up production to take up the short fall, there will definitely be a major gap in supply and demand. Guys with 50BMG rifles will now have to buy new brass rather than milsurp at 1/10 the cost. Same goes for bullets. A very expensive rifle to shoot just got a lot more expensive.
I heard that the US military is still hiring contractors to reload practise ammunition but that's about it. Absolutely no sale of brass for public consumption.
Americans are a lot quicker into the fray than we Canadians, they will find a way around this mess.
Wether it really has anything to do with internal gun control other than being an irritant, is yet to be seen. With all of the countless millions of rounds expended in the US military it's a reasonable assumption that the cases could be going to undesirables. Not that would really be an issue, considering the proliferation of US manufactured milspec ammunition throughout the world.

varget, titegroup god ways to go. But if you find deals on anything, buy it up. you might not use it, but it can be traded for stuff you do. ANd if the econmy doesnt come outa the toilette, we'll be using 22LR like nickles pretty soon

personnally, i really need to get my supplies up. oh, and im learning to cast my own ;)

I don't think his planing is very good when he has 25k in primers and 7 lbs of powder.
I won't ever be whining as I stocked up a few years ago. FS

Uh, you have a hard time reading what I wrote? I'm buying powder soon here, of which there is still a fair bit around. Just trying to decide what and letting the CC recharge a bit first. Sorry not everyone is as prudent as you

I been stocking up for a while now, 52000 primers, 14 different bullet molds, 40000 bullets, 40000 pieces of brass in various calibers. Enough powder to last for 4 years. No worries!

Yeah anyways I have pretty much standardized too. I am sticking with 10mm and the occasional batch of .40. Looking at getting set up to cast and reload my own 12g slugs. My stocks are bare compared to normal, haven't had a chance to do much hoarding. Have About 1100 virgin 10mm brass, lots of used brass and 650 assembled rounds. 2-3K primers, lots of JHP bullets. About 15 pounds of suitable powder. I really do need to restock now that I typed it out.

We were just quoted an excellent price on 20 million primers, so there are plants that have capacity. Now we have to go through the approval process with NRCAN so we can actually sell them here. Same goes for powder. Brass and bullets are a different matter. Most plants do not want to sell them as they are already booked with ammo orders.

I have started stocking up... I still have a ways to go, but my supplier has Win and CCI primers for $28 still and powder for a good price too... I payed $17 for a pound of Alliant Red Dot the other day, $26 for a pound of Herco.

Here's a little tip though... Hummason got shut down last week.
