Morning.

I almost have my reloading setup complete and I'm starting to collect the consumables. If I were to buy a single powder in bulk to start with (to mitigate stock issues), what would that be? We have 3 x 223s, one with a 1:9 twist, 24" barrel, the other two 1:8 with 20" barrels.

Thank you.

I only used Varget when I was loading 223 in 53-55gr., varmint bullets all Hornady V-Max.

I also used Varget with 75gr BTHPs on a different 223 years later.

Holy smokes, danged near anything that will work with the 308 will do fine for the .223!
4895, Varget, CFE223, Benchmark many of tge Vitivouri powders , it's not a fussy cartridge to load for at all .
I use either 4895 or Varget, varget mostly however.....

Thank you.

What conditions would make you choose the 4895 over the Varget or vice-versa?

I will agree with whats been said, personally I have only tried 3 so far those being cfe 223, varget, and TAC
I had no problems finding good loads with all 3 with bullets ranging from 55-77gn
I settled on an 8lb jug of cfe 223 because I found a good deal on it.

Varget sucks to meter, but is insanely temp stable and consistent. I use a lot of it. That one minor trade off is worth it IMHO.

Varget, -The staple but sucks metering, but I run an auto-measure
8208 XBR - I can't say anything bad other than you can't find it.
H335 - great for lighter projectiles but not the best option for the 69gr+

Haven't used Benchmark, or CFE223, and I hear N140 is the ####, but I haven't seen it on a shelf in years.... much like 8208

I am shooting the sierra 65 gr boat tail # 1395 bullet and getting good groups with AA2495 24.5 gr shooting 1/7 twist stainless bull barrel on a Savage 111

The .223 will eat any of the medium burners, I personally like Win 748 & AA 2015.
