Is there such a thing? Buying a pound of something that you may never use seems a bit ridiculous to me. Do Hodgdon, Alliant, IMR or the likes provide sample packs of their powders? I would love to buy a pound or two split into all their different powders to try small batches before I commit to buying in bulks such as a pound of one kind.

That would be an interesting idea, but depends what you load, some use a ton of powder and you can use a 1lb really fast, i ususally start with 1 lb and after i find what i like i buy 8lb keg at a time.

Hodgdon offered sample packs of 1/4 pound containers several years ago. At least they advertized them but I don't know anyone who actually saw them.

lol, a pound of powder is not bulk, besides it won't be hard to sell what you have left should you not like it or find it accurate enough. just record what you use and add a bit extra for spills and sell. simple.

Hodgdon used to have 4 packs of 1/4 pound samplers, maybe they still do. I never bought them because I thought that 1 pounders were the samplers and cases and kegs were the real deal.

I recall seeing them in stock at the Sportsman's Den in Red Deer - probably 15 years ago....

Del Selin's used to carry the sample packs.

I have no idea if he still does.

IMHO, they are a waste of money. Not enough powder to work up a decent load and make sure it will stay consistent under different conditions.

Another issue is that powder burn rates can vary quite a bit from lot to lot.

The sample packs look like a good idea but that's about it. In reality, you are much better off to look through a reloading manual, take a few notes about the powders you like the performance specs about, for the particular cartridge or cartridges you desire to reload. Once you have decided on which powders you like, buy a pound of each. If you can't afford to buy more than one pound, talk to a friend a split a pound.

Just remember, depending on which cartridge you're loading for, you may get less than 75 rounds out of a pound of powder. Pistol rounds are a different story, their loads are much smaller and you can get several hundred rounds out of a pound of powder. Same goes for small case rifle cartridges.

One powders are samples. Rifle powder comes in 20 kg drums (45 pounds). Order enough drums to get the job done. My pick up bulks out before it overloads with weight. The most I can get on one trip is about 1,300 pounds.
