Hi,

So I am choosing some powders to reload .30-30, .308, .270, and 8mm Mauser

.30-30 is a Marlin 336 with 20'' barrel and will load 170 gr RN bullets (Woods Deer Rifle)
.308 is a Ruger M77 with 22'' barrel and will load 165 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip (Main Deer Rifle)
.270 either in a Rem 700 or SAKO, for future considerations. 22'' barrel (150 gr Nosler BT and Partitions)
8mm Mauser is a Husqvarna M98 commercial rifle with 22'' barrel that I will load with 200 gr Speer Hot-Cors for <200 yard shots on moose/elk

I was recommended IMR 4895 for a general purpose powder, and I've read about 4064 as well.

I also saw that Hodgdon makes H4895, what difference is there from IMR 4895?

Any other recommendations?

4895 is an excellent powder. very similar to H4895. Buy whichever is available. Other good powders for those are RL15, 4064, 4320 and Varget.

If you use a ball powder, you can throw very accurate powder charges. For other than match ammo, I prefer the convenience of ball powder. H335 and 748 would be good choices of ball.

Whatever you choose make sure you can get a good supply of it, I can think of at least 2-3 cartridges that I had to rework up loads because the powder supply dried up this winter.

H4 895, IMR4895, 3031 or 4064 are all fine powders for the 30-30, 308 and I believe the 8mm mauser, but are a little too fast for optimal performance in the 270 win i believe. H4831 or IMR 4831 are proven performers in the 270.

I agree. Sorry. did not notice the 270 in that list. 4831 is the standard powder for 270. It would work with a heavy bullet in 8mm, too.

IMR4064 gives more consistent accuracy than either 4895(difference is the burn rate. They're close but not the same). Flows through powder throwers better too. Works particularly well with .30-06 and .308 with match bullets. For those cartridges, it'd be my choice if one is limiting oneself to one powder.
