powder shortage!?

I'm reminded of the fable of the grasshopper and the ant.;)

Hear, Hear!! I agree. I have been asked by several shooters to sell some of my powder/bullets/primers.

The answer is always the same; Sorry, but no. Lack of foresight on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part. :)

I probably have more bullets/greater variety in stock than Wholesale sports in town here, lol. Ditto powder.

Regards, Dave.

I usually bought powder in at least 3-5lb lots, or an 8lber. Over time it accumulated, and newer powders came along, some of those got acquired also, some haven't been touched yet.. The only thing I've had any issue with getting so far, was RL22, and I was in no panic for it. Only reason I didn't have enough for what I wanted, was that I didn't know it was the probable powder I'd need for one gun down the road, and the gun I'd originally got it for got sold, after using up a pound on it.
In the meantime, I have 3-4 others I can try out. I've had 2 lbs of RL22 all along, just isn't enough to work up a load and have a decent supply of the same lot, if it happens to be the powder that works the way I want it to. Picked up 2 more the other day, good to go now.

The US defense dept knows it has a potential problem with a production limitation, on the base stock of nitro cellulose supply, they only have one plant producing it, the other one shut down a few yrs back, the other plants are in Europe and Australia, ATK is a major shareholder in those also. With the current economic situation of the US gov't, it isn't likely they'll build another one, but, they'd like to.
Look at the new civilian ammo companies showing up over the last few yrs, they have been taking up quite a bit of the slack that was available in the powder market, that reduces the aftermarket availability for reloaders also. Two new shotshell mfgrs in Canada, Nosler in the US, HSM, probably a few others, Hornady expanded their products, the new cartridges that have shown up in the last 15-20 yrs. It all adds up in taking up the supply. The demand tripled or more a couple of yrs ago in the civilian market.
Liable to be like this for a while yet.

I looked back in my file receipt and found the price that I have paid for a 8 lbs of Titegroup 2 years ago... 156$ I don't think I will see that anymore. The good news is that I have enough for a year.

Went to pick up a 4lber of titegroup a couple years ago but all he had was 8's, thank god! Still haven't tapped that baby. I should be good for awhile!

You can inly get burned so many time with a store with empty shelves before you start buyimg in bult to get you over the dry spells. It is not hoarding. It is common sense.

But what I really wonder is what the guys currently complaining about hoarders will do once powder starts to flow again.

I already know the answer.

Some will buy a lot. Others will buy one pound of what they are out of, (because its expensive doncha know) and promise themselves that they won't run short again. Thus reassured they will confidently set out to buy the bullets that aren't in stock, to put in the brass they can't get.

Years ago when I was shooting a lot of clay targets and chewing up a lot of components. I/we never worried about shortages, the issue was who of all the suppliers would give us the best price. Never ever worried about shortages because there just never was any. So we never had to keep a years supply on the shelf. If you ran out of something you just went to whatever supplier you liked and bought whatever and how much you wanted. As long as you had the money they always had the stock. And you could buy and bring back stuff from the states as well without issue, just pay the duties and you were good to go.

My but it is a different world we live in now, between these little middle east conflicts we insist on participating in and Clinton and Obama it has definitely changed a fellas attitude and practices on how he keep's his reloading room stocked.

So don't be to hard on some fellas if they never seen the shortage issue coming and stocked up. It is hard to see something coming when you not expecting it and have no idea what it looks like. I never seen the first one, but I did the second so I am in good shape again this time around.
