Hello Cgn'ers,

I am asking for guidance being new to loading pistol ammo. Need guidance for a powder choice. I will be loading 9mm Luger, .38 special/.357 mag. It will be a single stage loading process RCBS Rock Chucker kit. I was thinking on goin with AA No.5. Your suggestions please.

I use 4.9 gr. WIN 231 for both 9 mm and .38 spl.

I use a 124 gr JRN for 9 mm with an OAL of 1.105".

I use a 158 JSWC for . 38 spl with an OAL of 1.420".

IMR 700-X will do all those calibers (most anyway). The only problem I've run into is that since it's a flake powder, I've had my measure throw low loads when trying to measure low grain wieghts.
Once I cleaned the measure the problem was solved, but it's something to watch for. Enjoy.:)

lister I use 700x for 12 ga shells, as well as SR7625. I might try some 700x. Thanks to all for the info.

Just a cautionary note. 700x is considered a moderately fast powder in handgun rounds, suitable for moderate loads only. Pressures can jump very quickly.

4.9 gr 231 in a .38 spl? I'm worried about you as off the top of my head in most manuals 3.7 to 3.9 is max. Please check your manuals to verify.

I may be wrong but I think thats pretty hot.

To answer the question about what powder to use, Acurate no 5 is hard to get but works. 231 in easier to find and works in both.

Howdy , Yea win 231 will do it BUT hog HP 38 is the same and bucks cheaper . It is temature sentive and can be smokey if you get into real lite loads . Knowing what a powder will do on a given day can be ajusted for .

Win 231 or HP 38 easy to get and won't break the bank. So far.

Hodgdon has a free loading site.

I've been using VihtaVuori's N320 on the promise (Bill Wilson) that it is clean. Though not for the frugal, this powder is nice to work with, delivers very consistent performance with tossed loads, and is remarkably clean burning. I'm happy to pay the extra for it (less than 1 cent per round).

Does W231 work well for the .45 acp?
What about the Ramshot powders, I know where there is a good supply of them for a reasonable price ( for times like these anyway) at $88.00 for a 4lb container.

I have used a number of powders and keep comingh back to IMR 7625. It is a bit bulky, so a double charge might be noticed.

I keep coming back to it because it meters very well and gets the best accuracy.

9mm 4.0gr 125 lead

40 S&W 5.5gr 170 lead

45ACP 6.0 200 SWC lead

Thanks I will have to try some of this as well. I use this powder for 20 and 28 ga.

last week while shooting with my freinds we sort of noticed that we shot .38 spec target wadcutter loads, 9mm 135 grn lead at 130pf, .40S&W 180 grn lea at 140 pf and .45acp 200 gr lead at 175 pf and they are all loaded with 231 and all accurate.
kinda a versitile powder. each caliber may have a better powder for it but 231 will do them all
