Tell me about factory ammo in the weatherby cartridges. Are they loaded on the side of lower velocity? Lots of bullet choices??

they were loaded by norma and more on the hot side i will say.

I am very interested in this. I know the Weatherby's claim the "shock" factor due to the speed.

I am building a rifle and must order my barrel but I am having a very hard time deciding on caliber. I understand this is a deeply personal decision but I want a ass kicker round that drops sheep/deer on their backs that also doesn't kick.....is that too much to ask?!?!?!? LOL.

I prefer a 24inch barrel or shorter and prefer no brake. But I am open to suggestions.

I hunted all of Saskatchewan’s big game for a couple decades with only 2 rifles. A ruger #1 .270 weatherby and a Winchester featherweight 30-06. I was carrying the ‘06 hunting moose when I missed a long shot on the biggest whitetail I’ll ever see. He ended up on the cover of North American whitetail magazine, scored around 250”. Should of had the number 1 that day.
If I were the OP I’d build very similar rifles on the actions he has in .270 ‘bee and 300 win mag.

25-06/6.5/270 Win/7x57/280 Rem good choices, and hard to go wrong even as large as 30-06. Myself, I went with 280 Rem and 338-06 as a pairing in LA's. (35 Whelen could be an option)
Given 2 actions, and not mentioning whether long or short action, or even magnum bolt face, begs the question to be answered on action length/type.
Weatherby can work out of 24" barrels, but will lose some velocity (25-50 fps/inch depending on rifle). And there is cost and ammo availability that has been mentioned, along with additional recoil. 6.5 PRC requires magnum bolt face. 6.5x284 does not, but some prefer to build on a long action in order to seat higher BC bullets out further
In short actions, the 260/7-08/308 are good choices. Can even look at 284 Win, but again, many prefer to build on long actions in order to seat higher BC bullets out further. Myself, I went with 7mm-08 and 338 Federal as a pairing in SA's. (love my 358 Win too)

I think the OP wants a magnum, at least that's what I got out of his original post. He mentioned the 257 and 270 weatherby. imo the 270 bee is the wiser choice for deer especially if you want to hunt moose or elk as well. For me a 270 win does everything I need in a deer rifle. In the end it's whatever floats your boat.
