I am looking for options and opinions on what type of semi auto would be good for PPC.
I have been shooting PPC for 17 using a revolver (Roy Cambell Custom). I have not be activitly shooting in the last 3-4 years, time issues.
What guns are better for PPC, I see S&W PPC9's. I really do not look at other shooters guns.
I also shoot IPSC but again time issues.

thanks

Target master

go with the STI targetmaster in 45acp

why 45 scp
bigger hole in 7-15 yards so more X

6in bull Barrel
easy to tune 1911
easy to find replacement parts
less expensive than a Performance

try to repair a performance center gun ,...you loose it for a year for sure

try to repair a 1911---you can do it yourself

45 better than 9mm
easier to reload but more expensive to shoot that's the downpoint

but you can have it in 9mm too

If you want to spend the $$$, that S&W PPC9 is out of this world. A fellow at our club has 2 of them and those things are so accurate. The workmanship is out of this world, you would never in a million years think you were shooting and S&W auto.

PPC- Semi option

Thanks for the input. I think I might use a 9mm 1911 and tune it for the targets. I wish I had lots of money, for a S&W PPC. I might even look at a Sig 226 in 9mm.

If you don't mind looking around... a few guys are using S&W M52 with modified magazine to hold the 6th round.
Unfortunately, the model 52 is not eligible for the Distinguished event. It is permissible for the open 1500 though.

As already mentioned the PPC9 guns are some of the most accurate pistols ever produced. Felt recoil is extremely little. NFA events limit barrel length for Dist. at 5". Up here in Canada, we can use a 6" pistol.

Because these guns are at least as accurate as ANY custom revolver, ie. Ron Powers, Maryland Gun Works, Bill Davis, Ron Smith, Tanaka, Charlton/Spikeblock, Dlask, etc etc, with today's semi auto guns, if a guy was staying here in Canada to shoot PPC, a 6" SW PPC9 would be almost the only gun you would need to cover almost all events.

Pretty well any repair needed to be done to those guns could be handled in country. Saying that, I know of a few dozen of the guns, and own a couple, and never heard of anyone needing work. I can't say that with a comparable amout of 1911s. Just my experience.

PPC- Semi option

I have not seen in person a PPC9 (only in pictures) - have not seen one for sale. What do they cost? How would they compare to a custom built gun?

I have a custom built revolver and would not trade it.

Both the 5 and 6" models are around. Usually I've seen them sold by word of mouth. Questar brought in a bunch last year, but they have been bought. The SOP for these guns from the S&W performance center has been, they only sold them to LE officers in the US. Things were done up here and therefore there are a few in various hands.

I guess the answer is, check around the PPC clubs.

Cost, well they are retaining their value here. My guess is as always, depending on shape, usage, accessories, etc etc, $1800ish.

I have Ransom Rest tested a lot of guns, including a variety of match heavy barreled revolvers, by the names of the guys above. I found the S&W PPC9 pistols to shoot better groups @ 50 yds. Not a lot of difference, most good guns shooting at least an X size group, with 24 round strings. But the PPC9 guns have been a slight bit tighter than pretty well every revolver I've tested.

Would the S&W 952 fall in the same category restriction as the 52?

No, the 952 is a 9mm. I've seen a few guys using the 952. They seem to like the slimer grip, as compared to the fatter 5906/PPC9 double stack frame. Basically a newer version of the Mod 39. From what I've seen and heard, they shoot very well, as expected from the Performance shop.

PPC- Semi option

The S&W 952 costs about $2300-2500 depending, that is quite a bit. That is getting in the range of my IPSC gun.

I will have to start and look around at matches for the PPC9 and then see if there are any for sale.

thanks for the input.

I shoot PPC & Distingushed with a SIG X-5 Allround 9mm. Its sa/da so it can be used for distingushed as well as PPC. Its nice to us one gun for both disiplines. I also shoot a 226 elite 9mm for duty, same mags as the X-5, and most ( not all ) the parts are the same.

STI Targetmaster in 9mm, the 6 inch one.
I have one from Freedom Ventures for Metallic sight catergory in Action Pistol(Bianchi Cup).
Have not played with loads for it that much, but with factory it will do better than 2 inches at 50yards.
Also cheaper than the smith by a fair bit.

I do not shoot at big matches, only at my club level as I shoot IDPA as well, but, I use my SIG P226 9mm and the same rig I use for IDPA. I find that PPC has very much imporved my accuracy, it is great shooting. I use the same 9mm load for PPC that I use for IDPA, again not in competition, but it is accurate, and again, I just shoot for practice, but I think I shoot pretty good with my SIG. If you are going to go all out nuts on a PPC rig and gun, go for what you can, if you are doing it for fun and occasional match, find the gun that best suits you, and shooting PPC will make you more accurate with it.

I don't know but I guess I am old school. I used to use a series 70 Colt .45
but only in service auto class. I found them super easy to work on, get parts
for etc. The .45 round was excellent to reload accurately for and the guns
were not out of this world to purchase. I managed to click off 570-580's with
it in a 600 course of fire so they can be made to work. If you want to run
in open class, then a lower recoiler would be the way to go(9mm etc)
