From what I can tell, these seem to be used for plinking and home defense. Any practical hunting applications that anyone has tried? In looking at pistol caliber ballistics (357 mag, 44 mag, 9mm), I'm not really sure if there are any!

Would love to hear from those who have real practical experience.

Cheers :)

I'd personaly use .44 mag with right ammo up to moose sized game under 100yards without a second thought. Look at the tables and there's plenty of killing power, and 44 going to leave a nice big hole compared to 30cal

well, 9mm is pretty useless for hunting, and 357 Mag is borderline (IMO - but a great plinker), the 44 Mag & 45 Colt are hard hitters inside 100 yards, good cartridges for hunting deer and black bear in the brush, when housed in handy lever carbines. I'd buy a Marlin in 454 Casull in a heatbeat

As a general Camp gun a gun that can fire light .44 special loads and bone smashing 320 grain lead monsters is excedingly useful. Bears, moose, deer under 100 yards and Grouse, rabbits and things that go bump in the night. You'd be hard pressed to find a more versatile gun for general woodsloafing and hunting in the trees.

"...practical hunting applications..." Small game for the 9mm. Deer sized game, close in, for the rest of 'em. Mind you, no firearm needs a practical hunting application.

9mm is fun for gophers if you want a challenge. Acurracy becomes difficult after 25yrds but you sure know when they hit. I came across a coyote one day and tried the 9mm, but I may as well have been throwing rocks.
