Hello all. I was hoping someone out there could offer me some assistance. I am actively searching for properties on which to hunt "gophers" in the Edmonton/Red Deer/Calgary area with my nephew and my father. The nephew is an absolute crack shot and between my father and myself there is 70+ years of hunting experience. I would very much like to take them out for a weekend in the near future so we could get a little "guys time" in. I have a camper to stay in if you're okay with that on your land, if not I could find hotel accomodations (or a campsite) nearby. Any help would be greatly appreciated and you can PM me with details or to get my phone number so we could discuss further. Thank you very much, Kyle.

I could suggest a few spots, but they are a couple of hours south of Calgary, so it depends on how far you are willing to travel from your location. Where are you?

Just for the sake of terminology, what are commonly called gophers here and prairie dogs are two distinctly different critters... we don't have prairie dogs here, you'd have to go south to Montana or the Dakotas to find them.

As well maybe you should have added that in Alberta you don't "hunt" gofers, you blow the s*&t out of the grubby little bastards. At least that seems to be the popular view.

Not sure if you are refering to just you guys in Alberta but I have come across a prairie dog colony in Southern Sask when I was mule deer hunting a couple years ago. They are huge in comparison to the Richardsons we normally see.

Anybody shooting a prairie dog in Saskatchewan is going to spend a long time in jail. They are a "species of special concern" here! There are none in Alberta and they are confined to 12 square kilometers of habitat in extreme southern Sask, almost all in Grassland National Park. People who don't know the difference keep calling Richardson's Ground Squirrels ( AKA " gopher" ) prairie dogs. The correct name does matter!

I've heard that on occasion they can be found in the farthest south east corner of Alberta at times too. I only mentioned the prairie dog thing because some people mistakenly call Richardson's Ground Squirrels prairie dogs.

Hello again guys, I was just hoping to find spots to "hunt" the standard little beige fellas found throughout the province. Richardsons I presume. Not too picky about species, as long as there's lots of 'em. Again, any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Dont you guys have marmott, on our Ontario farm they are a pest, sometime we have to let the barrel cool down but big fun factor with my 2 oldest grandsons... JP.

Marmotts are protected in Alberta. I think it's groundhogs you likely have in Ontario...also called woodchucks.
