I am the happy buyer of a pre 1898 Colt double action in .41 caliber. Now since it was fitted with an after market bulky and ugly as hell set of grips, I am looking to replace them for originals or someting close to it. I have bought a set of reproduction black resin grips for Colt 1892 but am NOT sure if this is a model 1892 or if the repro grip will fit.

Can anyone tell me if this is a 1892, and if grips will fit if it is another model?

Here is the pics:

I remember seeing that one (grips are.....um..... memorable :D )
That doesn't look like the proper cylinder for an 1892. Doesn't seem to have any cylinder stops on the side. Serial number below 91,200?

Its NOT a 1892 its a 1889 colt DA going by that cylinder unless someone has put a 1889 Cylinder in a 1892 Frame.
Ser # would help.
The cylinder is a 1889 Model as Killer pointed out its got no Stop notches and they were hard to get the lock up working 100% of the time.

Thats why the 1892s have the Stops.
I had a 1889 but it wouldnt lock up very well.
I think the grips of a 1892 will fit, maby.

I think the frame is an 1892 frame - the 3 screws on the right sideplate are close together, like on an 1892. They're a little farther apart on an 1889.

I think your Right look at the frist Picture you can see the slot in the frame under the Cylinder where the Stop Lever comes up to engage the Cylinder notch.
The Levers either been pulled out or its spring removed.
Its Antique theres no worries there.
Timeing could be a bit Tricky tho!

Hope all is OK with the timming, here what the description was saying on the Auction page:

This Revolver has not been Refinished or Mechanically Modified (Trigger Work, Replaced internals, Etc.).

Surely hope this is accurate !!

But, what type of grip shall I get for it ( Any early 1900 large frame colt grips ?)

My guess would be grips to fit an 1892 (which they have listed) but you'll probably have to wait until you have it in you hands to figure out exactly which model it is - an 1889, or an 1892 with an 1889 cylinder.

I have an 1892 Colt Army Navy in .41 Colt and the frame sure looks the same.
I just got some .41Colt, Starline brass from Williams in Port Perry, On., $36.00 for 50pcs. I had to order it in.

Just spoke to some colt guys on another forum, and they confirm that this is a Model 1889 said Navy model . Will definately look much better with real colt grips.
