I am trying to find out the value of my pre-1961 Cooey model 84 chambered in 28ga with a 28" barrel.
The shotgun is in good condition. No cracks, no rust and completely functional.
Serial number is a 5 digit number 14###
Thanks

I said that because this is the only information of build date I have. The marking is not the same on the pre-61 compared to the the ones after 61.

They do command a premium.

Most single shot Cooeys go for $100 to $200 depending on shape. So, maybe $200 to $300 depending on condition for your 28ga as it is not as common a chambering.

Can you post pics?

Cheers
Jay

The only difference in the Cooey era and the Winchester Cooey era for the Model 84, is the stamping on the side of the receiver.Cooey era 28 gauge Model 84 guns are marked H.W.Cooey,while Winchester Cooey 28 gauge Model 84 guns are marked Winchester Western(Canada Limited).Quality of both guns is the same.I have seen more 28 gauge Model 84 guns marked H.W.Cooey than I have seen marked Winchester Western.

With dark wood,I am guessing there is no finish left on the wood? This in my opinion ,lowers the condition and value of the piece to a collector. If the finish is gone ,I am also guessing that a lot of the bluing is gone, as well as the colour case hardening on the receiver?

If this is true ,I am guessing the value to a true collector would drop much and the gun would have a value of $200 to $250 as a shooter.Just my thoughts on the subject.

Yes, a better description than "good condition" will be needed for an accurate value because it can range from $150.00 to a high of around $375.00 + or -. So a more detailed description of your gun with photos would be to your benefit if you want a closer evaluation.

28 is the holy grail for cooey enthusiasts. Anything under 300 will be snapped up instantly.

It depends on condition. Not many will pay $300.00 for a well used Cooey even if it is 28 gauge. Now if in nice condition, it will go quickly at $300.00. I bought one for $200.00 a few months back off the EE. It was listed for at least a week before I bought it.

Yes ,condition makes the difference to a true collector.Great condition takes the gun from just a shooter to a true collector gun.Having the original box helps price as well. The 28 gauge Cooey Model 84, although not found in the numbers of the other gauges, is rare only in the terms of these other gauges.Over time I have owner many 28 gauge Model 84 guns and they can usually be found with a bit of looking and talking to people.

Know of two in my area that are owned by older people ,who still use them in hunting.

There was a cooey 28 for sale on the EE here a few months ago.....400 bucks. Someone bought it. Personally, I wouldn't go over 200. My last cooey .410, in very nice condition, I bought off the EE for 160.

I paid $200 for mine with wood that I replaced with NOS. The earlier 84 will also have a metal forend spacer as opposed to the plastic one on the 840.Best 40 yard upland shotgun gauge IMO.

I guess ,there is always someone without the knowledge or just really wants one and buys the first one that comes along, regardless of the price.:)

I sold one 84 28ga here NIB for $500 and it didnot last on the EE 30 minutes with a bunch of takers wanting it after the first buyer
So much so I figured later I sold it too cheap :(

The barrel had been painted black. Perfect bore and tight lock up. No dents in the barrel. Forearm nice in original finish with no cracks. The stock had original finish with no cracks, in fact barely even a scratch, but someone had inserted 4 small plastic discs abut 1/8" deep into the stock as decoration. I guess between painting the barrel and adding the discs they were adding a "personal touch" So I easily removed the paint from the barrel and I just finished slow rust bluing it and it looks great. I have another stock I could have put on it but I always wanted to take a gun and have my past and present hunting dogs painted on the wood. Since this gun has no checkering to contend with, I figured it was the perfect candidate combining my hunting buddies and some Canadian firearms history in a harder to find gauge. The stock and forearm are at my artist friend's place right now . I can always put it back to original configuration if I wanted to. The point is this gun is mechanically perfect, the receiver is not all rusted or pitted to heck and the wood not all cracked/beat up and I got it for $200.00. The listing was in plain view with pics by a seller who has been on the EE for quite some time. Nobody wanted it at the time because of the painted barrel and the discs in the stock. A little TLC and someone could have had a very nice gun. But that comes to my other point. A lot of people won't pay a stupid high price for one if condition doesn't warrant it. Below is one of the pics that was posted in the listing.
