Hello ev'rybody,
Anyone know what the twist rate is on my new-to-me 1950 Winchester Model 70 chambered in the outstanding .30-06?
I got a smoking deal on this rifle, looks quite good. Just going to restock it and keep the original steel butt plate stock in the closet. Don't want to alter the original.

You should be telling us what the twist rate is! It likely is 1 in 10 inches.
Arrange your cleaning rod so when you put a patch on it, the whole rod turns. From the muzzle, push it most of the way through the rifling. Make a little mark with a marking pen on the rod, at the end of the barrel, and exactly on top.
Slowly pull the rod out until the mark again turns to the top and stop. The distance from your mark to the end of the barrel is your twist rate.
This has been said on here several times, but I guess not everybody has seen it, or figured out a way to do it!

H4831, thanks for the tip, I hadn't heard that one either. I have a 30-06 rifle that has 1 in 9 inches rifling that prefers 165 grain bullets. I have the opportunity to buy a pre-64 model 70 rifle, and if the rifling is 1 in 10, generally speaking, would the grain preference change to a heavier grain, or a lighter grain, or would the twist change be too minimal?

For the most part, shoot whatever weight bullet you want to shoot in whatever rifle you have. It would be extremely rare if the 30-06 rifle would not shoot great with 165 grain bullets, because of the rifling be too fast a twist.
