Pre 64 Winchester 94' 38-55 Octagon opinion

Thanks for all the input fella's. I bought the gun today and couldn't be happier with it. Yes, it's been re blued and has had two inches cut off the barrel, but it looks to be a tidy job and a new dovetail was cut. The gun looks nice and seems well balanced when I bring it to my shoulder. $300 for a refurbished pre 64 1894 38-55 was indeed a good buy....sometimes I can get caught up in the collector aspect and lose sight of the most important part of firearms ownership....the shooting. I may even try my hand @ reloading for this old girl.....she's found a good home I figure.

Congrats, you're going to enjoy shooting this caliber. Lots of 38-55 fans on here if you need any info, i.e reloading, etc.
Also, don't go by production dates posted online, all are based on production run numbers for this model (and others) that are incorrect. According to the Polishing Room Serialization records at the BBHC, your gun - 62XX - was serialized sometime before the end of 1895. There were only 1674 Model 1894s serialized in the first production year. Still a REALLY early gun, very hard to find them that early.
Have fun and let us know how it shoots.

Thanks Matt, I'm actually pretty exited about this particular rifle. She's had a facelift, a tummy tuck and a boob job, but she still has the grace of Olivia Walton underneath......lots of layers to this onion

I fell asleep in my recliner with this gun on my lap last night....my wife walks in and scolded me for having it in the living room....."get that old thing off the furniture mister!"......ok fine, but I'm saying the same thing to you the next time your father comes to visit!

X2. I had a real good chuckle over that.

Don't worry, we've all come across those guns where you're so excited, you almost want to take it to bed with you, lol. Enjoy the gal.

Matt
