Pre 64 Winchester 94 help

Ive inherited a pre 64 Winchester 94 .30-30 top eject and want to set it up as a hunting rifle for close range (deer and black bear)

What im thinking is putting a scout scope mount up front and mounting a vortex sparc or aimpoint T1/H1, does anyone sell a quality scout scope setup for the winchester 94 here in canada?

what's more close range than iron sights?
seriously you have a classic that many claim is the penultimate close range or brush gun and has been for over a century...
 
thanks for the responses guys, Its already had its collector value ruined though (rust + pitting was all over the receiver when I got it, also someone went happy with a drill and did a butcher job on the front barrel band installing a front sling swivel). It was my grandfathers gun though so I dont intend on reselling it ever.

ive never had much luck hunting with iron sights though except under really ideal conditions

Anyone have any experience with the Burris fastfire? ive read it can be mounted on a 94 top eject if it is drilled+tapped by smith.
 
Scopes ruin the aesthetics, and the fast handling qualities of the '94 IMO. A Williams Fool Proof receiver sight is what I have used on mine for over 40 years. It's fast, far more accurate that the original sight (longer sight radius) , durable, and inexpensive.

I second the motion.
If you still want a 94 with a scope, get a newer side eject. You could also consider 307, 356 or 375 and other's. I really liked my 356.
 
I put a donated vintage Redfield reciever sight on a 1956 '94 I was given.

Gets 2 1/2 to 3-inch groups at 100 metres.
 
Put that one away in rememberance of your grandpa and go buy yourself a BLR.
Play with the 30-30 when you go out fun shooting.
Maybe with a bit of practice, you will gain some confidence in shooting with open irons.

Leupold used to make a scope mount that would be exactly what you want. It mounted on the barrel, in the dovetail slot for the rear sight, and the rear band had to be drilled and tapped for the other anchor point. They were intended to be used with low-power long eye relief scopes. They're no longer made, so the only way to find one would be to haunt the gun shows and ebay. One will turn up eventually.

ebay? I have never looked for gun stuff on ebay. I thought it was a no-no, or is it just (FRAUD ALERT) that has the problem with gun stuff? What have I been missing out on!!!???
 
It depends on the part and the seller; some will ship to Canada, some won't. They usually aren't quite so uptight about scope mounts as some other parts. As far as our customs goes, I've never had a problem bringing up gun parts.
