Was given a very clean pre 64 Model 70 but bolt is nowhere to be found. Just wondering what my options are? Would sourcing a bolt be worth it or should I part it out and sell as is? Also, any ideas on where to get a bolt?

Gun is 30-06,

Patrick

Shame to part it out, especially if it is in nice shape. I have seen M70 bolts on Ebay, the post '64 ones being the most common however.
Maybe post a WTB ad on the EE? Got to be one out there somewhere....

That's a bummer. I'd hold onto it for now...you never know when a bolt will show up somewhere. You're probably still stuck with parting it out but an action with a bolt will get you $600 easily where an action sans bolt would max out at $200, IMO.

I wonder if a "Classic" or FN bolt would work? Classic had the same trigger mechanism. Might be worth looking into. A gunsmith you trust could tell you for certain. Or Rembo...he might know.

A complete bolt will easily sell on ebay for $300 -$350 plus. . If you can find a seller who'll ship to Canada; you'll have currency exchange rate, shipping costs and don't forget our little Canadian friends who add the gst, pst and a cost for ripping the parcel apart. . Then a gunsmith will need to headspace the bolt and this cost will vary on the initial fit. . You may get lucky.

Some folks store their rifles with the bolts removed.. Can't help wondering if this was one of those rifles.

Damn Bolt ran off with the missing sock from the Dryer. Held together so they dont get lost by the bungie cord that came off the trailer last year.

I am sure most have had one of these moments before, nothing worse. Unless its on a hunting trip miles from home. Typically i put important things like that away so i do not lose them...ultimately hiding it from myself. It shows up, when i put something else away safe.

I received the gun from a messy divorce, if the ex husband has or knows where the bolt is, he's not giving it up now. I'm not a fan of Model 70's personally so I won't be sourcing/paying for another bolt. I will likely part it out

I'd sit on the gun for a bit to see if things settle down and there may be a chance to get the bolt latter on. After that, I'd part it out.

Personally, my two options would be:

1. Hang onto it & hope a bolt shows up somewhere [gunshow, etc].

2. Look for a "beater" Win 70 pre '64 .30-06 to scavenge the bolt from then part the rest of that one out. ;)

Since your first post says the rifle is very clean, it would be a shame to part it out. I get all misty eyed just thinking about it.

X2 on Super Cub's sage thoughts, sit on it and wait it out. The bolt may turn up. Put an ad on the EE as mentioned......

Go over to the Alberta Outdoorsman Forum, post a WTB there too, or get one of us to do it for you.....

A lot of stuff got wet and ruined last June in YYC, who knows.....a submerged bolt could be salvaged perhaps over a stock in similar distress?

Worth a shot...

I was thinking the same thing. . . Oh, by the way . . 270, 30-06, 308, etc. will all fit. . Not the magnum calibers as the bolt face is opened up. . I hope the OP gets this rifle running as he may figure out why the pre-64 Model 70 has such a loyal following.

The "messy divorce," is very likely deeply involved in the mystery of the lost bolt.
One ex had the rifle, the other took, hid, etc, the bolt.
Concentrate on this angle. You know the circumstances, so somehow, work on the ex that did not have the rifle.
