Can anyone tell my whether or not the firing pin is spring loaded?
My buddies gun just stopped hitting the primer. When the hammer is drawn back the transfer bolt the hammer strikes is not under tension. Rotate the gun skyward and downward it falls in and out of place so I'm thinking a spring inside the bolt has bit the dust am I correct in my thinking?
The gun cycles smooth and cocks the hammer just fine. The trigger drops the hammer with authority but there's no indication of a firing pin hit
How much of a pain is it to take that bolt out and apart?

Lots of models made prior to 1964, what model and caliber/gauge are you talking about?

With the action open, assuming it's a Win 94, let the firing pin fall back as you point the muzzle up. Now push on the back of the firing pin and see if the tip protrudes through the front of the bolt. If it does, check to make sure it's not broken. Hold onto the tip and let go of the rear portion of the firing pin.

Well after a couple hours of attempts at removing the stock screw which was stuck I cracked out the rare breed and sipped a few shots. The stock screw turns 1/2 turn either way but that is it so I took out the link screw and pin and the lever screw and pin and found the small pin in the back of the bolt and hammered it out and hey the firing pin came out without a complete tear down and without having to remove the stock.
Now if my local gunsmith doesn't have one in stock does anyone know the part number for a pre 64 firing pin top eject that has a rear notch?
