Pre-B CZ-75

Hi to whomever see’s this post and knows a lot about the CZ-75..
I bought a “pre-B” CZ-75 to save some cash (military surplus) but it only came with 1 magazine. From what I can tell, the next generations after the “pre-B” had a slight difference in magazine design/dimensions. Is this a true fact? I’d really like to get more magazines for this gun but I want to know what will work and what won’t. Pre-B mags seems next to impossible to find.

What year is the gun? A lot of the surplus guns were transitional models and not true Pre Bs so regular CZ mags may fit in addition to actual Pre B mags. The “Pre B” mags Marstar has (they list them as out of stock but if you email them you can buy them) are not Pre B mags, they’re regular mags that the CZ 75B would ship with in a free country so they don’t fit in a true Pre B.

Northern Republic carries new production Pre B mags although I don’t have any experience with them so I don’t know if they are actually Pre B mags.

As an alternative, the old OEM CZ factory mags with the goofy plastic basepads (short mag body, 1/4 or so plastic basepad) are narrow enough to fit in my 1986 true Pre B. These will likely be cheaper if you can still find them (they were the OEM mags before CZ started shipping guns with the blue follower Mecgar mags).
 
I believe it is from the early 80s last time I looked, but I’ll have to verify that again. I bought it from Firearms Outlet Canada and they denoted it as Pre-B, but I was unaware of these transitional models - good to know. Is there an easy way to differentiate it as a transition model, is it based on year? Or can I take some measurements with my vernier caliper of the mag well/magazine to see what mag is required?
I emailed Marstar this morning about it, said they used to carry the pre-b mags but they are hard to find these days.

The transitional models were in the early to mid 90s. They’ll look like a mix of the Pre B and B, ie it might have a ring hammer and squared off trigger guard but still say CZ 75 (instead of CZ 75B) on the slide. If it’s from the 80s then it’ll be a true Pre B.
 
IIRC, modern mags may or may not fit, depending on the tolerances. Worst case scenario, it takes a minor modification to the frame to slightly open up the upper end of the magwell, then you can use modern $29.99 Mec Gar mags

If you want to keep it in the original collectible form, that's another story

I like the idea of making it accept modern mags, Northern Republic Magazines has the pre-b mags (out of stock) for 79.99.. a bit more than I want to spend. I’ll be looking in to the frame mods shortly here, I’m not too concerned about keeping it stock, as long as I don’t frig anything up.

My CZ75 was made in 86 , they fit the mag well and the mag release engaged properly, but I had some Issue with the slide not being able to move with the mag in , just too tight , I sanded the feed lips a little [ it won't open them up enough to cause any problems ] and now they work .
 
If your pre-B still has it's friction spring, it might cause issues with B mags. The friction spring is a long, flat spring inside the pistol grip designed to prevent mags from dropping free. If you slide your finger up the back of the mag well, and it's smooth, you still have it. Most folks removed theirs back in the day.

I just verified the year, it is also a 1986 model, a bit newer than I was thinking. I might try this route. Thank you for the help & link!

Just confirmed the date on mine and it’s also ‘86. This seems to be the least intrusive method. Thanks for the link & help.
