Pre-War Model 70 7x57 Mauser

Need some info on a Model 70 I am thinking of buying in 7x57 Mauser (7mm Mauser). Seller claims pre-war, serial number is 49###. Buttpad obviously not original but seller claims it is otherwise original. I also thought the pre-64 Model 70s had checkered stocks? Can anybody tell me about this gun in this cal? Does the bluing and stock look original in your opinion? Doesn't look 60 + years old to me but I don't know much about Model 70s. Any idea what's it worth? Thanks to those who reply. Not sure about the rear sight or if it is d&t'd. I will ask seller. If there is no rear sight this would affect value of course but is it worth less if D&T'd?
 
It won't be factory drilled and tapped for scope.
They will all tell you it will be worth less if d & t. But let's think about that. I presume you got, or are getting it, to shoot. While the aperature sight was great in it's day, it is now far more practical to have a hunting type scope on it.
So it is up to you. I say, if you want to enjoy your rifle in that spendid old calibre, get a good gunsmith to drill and tap it to accept Weaver bases, then mount a vintage model scope on it. On three of my vintage rifles I have two with Texas Weaver steel, K3 scopes and the other is a 4x Lyman All American.
By the way, those are all excellent hunting scopes and and in no way do they handicap the shooter.
 
Well, according to the Riflemans Rifle, receiver serial number 49625 was produced 6/3/42, receiver serial number 48,775 on 5/2/42 and serial number 50254 on 7/8/42. total quantity if 7mm .manufactured : 1,470 units in all. shouldnt be factory drilled, but you will get by just fine with that receiver sight. if i were you, i would leave it alone. good luck

This is what I thought as well. It doesn't look as old as it is to me. It is a few hours away and not on the EE so I won't be having it shipped. I just want to make sure everything is ok before driving to get it. My main concern is if it has been redone at all and what is its value. I want to make sure it is fairly priced as I do not know alot about these guns at all. Thanks to those who have replied so far.
 
It's not a model 70, it's a model 54. Bolt has been jeweled, shouldn't be, stock should be checkered, though I can't be 100% sure that some weren't made without checkering. I would say the stock at least has been refinished at the time the recoil pad was installed.

Had another look at the pictures, peep sight seems correct for the period, but I'm guessing a complete refinish.

How do you know that its a 54?
 
It has a mauser style safety, (except that it works completely backwards), not the 3-position safety of the model 70. Bolt handle also is not bent for scope use like a model 70.

Front sight doesn't look original to me either, but I need a closer look at it.

Thanks alot for the tips. The bolt handle definitely looks different than a Model 70 now that I compare the two. I think I best stay away from this rifle. Looks to have too many issues. Thanks again to those who replied.

I know. They are the seller's pics not mine and I was not going to ask for more unless I was sure I was serious. Crappy pics drive me nuts too but it's still better than a "what's it worth thread" with no pics! Now that I compare the two Models I see the mag plate looks different on the 54 and the 70s as well.

A post war M70 that you're using as a donor would sell for $600 just for the action. That said, it's no Model 70 but a Model 54. $500 would be max in my book.
