A buddy at the range on the weekend had a really interesting tool that I had never seen before. He took a once fired case from my rifle, inserted into a collar, threaded another piece into the collar, and then using a vernier scale on the exterior of the inner sleeve, he was able to tell, relative to SAMMI spec, where the shoulder in MY chamber was. The idea being that you set your dies to bump the shoulder back only a couple thou more than this so that you minimise workhardening the brass.

I was so taken by the device that I forgot to ask him who made it or where he got it. It was about 3" long, and gun metal black. I have searched a bunch of the obvious manufacturers websites but to no avail.

Anyone have any idea what I am talking about, or more importantly, where I could get one?

Handy little item, but you may want to verify it works properly before calling it 'precision'. ;) See this thread:

Oooo,,,,,

Now THAT is interesting ! Thanks for the heads up. :(
Makes me second guess buying one used off of ebay.

Wonder what they will say at Lebarons when I pull a live .308 case out of my pocket to check the calibration of the unit before I buy it

Cheers !

Well, if it's calibrated off, you can return it to rcbs, or just remember or write down how much it's off by and sutract that from your result.
