Precision Hunting - Rem. 700 P

I havent done a lot of off hand shooting..so no answers there. When I shoot kneeling/standing I have not had any problems with the wide stock at all. To be honest I dont think its that bad for width. The long barrel can get old if your in thick woods. I once lost a nice buck because it came out of the woods beside me and I couldnt swing my rifle around without hitting a bunch of small trees...damn. So far the stock and finish are still mint, and thats after 5 years of Manitoba hunting. hope this helps

I do a lot of walking, I do a lot of sitting, I do a lot of driving, I do alot of packhorse hunting. 5 extra pounds on a rifle isn't going to kill me. I'm big enough and already carry 10 to 100 lbs of gear hunting in remote areas. I doubt I'll be mountain hunting with it and 100 lbs of gear. Chambered in 300 WM, I'm not going to be sorry for the weight.

I'm more concerned with the stock, handling and balance. Do you find the wide / thick stock makes this rifle difficult to shoot offhand or from a non tripod / sandbag supported position? Is the length and weight well balanced in this model or is it excessively barrel heavy? Is it so damn long you're irritated carrying it arround? Does the stock and matte finish hold up well to the elements?

The VS/700P shoots offhand not bad if you ask me, best kneeling or prone of course. Barrel's only 2-4" longer than a standard hunting rifle, doesn't make much difference. Stock's just fine for all around shooting, it certainly doesn't shoulder like a normal hunting rifle, but it'll do the job. She's a heavy beast if you're hunting the mountains in the west, and that's about it's main and only serious drawback.
 
I used a VSF 308 and a 700P in 308 also and they worked great for hunting up here on the tundra but we traval on snowmobiles and ATV's most times do to the fact that we have no trees. I find you are more stable shooting standing up compared to smaller rifles.
 
Yes, the stock is a bit wide, but not difficult for offhand. Because of the extra weight the wider forend helps distribute the weight better when cradling the gun in front. I've since switched out the 700P stock with a laminated varmint stock, but the wider forend is still there. I prefer a minumum of 24" and Rem Varmint contour barrels for my hunting needs. They feel just right, balance and point perfectly for me.

I also may walk up to 5 miles a day and mostly hitch rides with my buddies ATV's to get into spots. I sometimes climb into rocky hills to get that right spot. The extra 3 or so lbs. really makes no difference to me. I'm not trekking 20 miles across mountains and probably never will.
