Precision Hunting rig WHAT OVERBORE CALIBER

I'd look at MPI stocks for light weight stuff. Also look at Wyatt outdoors for your box magazine bits. I have a feather weight 300 WSM that uses their system in a bdl that is now a centre-line feed. No feeding issues. Just some more ideas. Beware these light guns are no fun to shoot. The day I did sight in and load development with mine I fired 32 rounds. Driving home it was hard to clear my vision, everything was blurry. I'd given myself a concussion. I'm doing it again, this time it'll be a 366 DGW. Piper.

Though the 7SAUM has made its bones in the long range target shooting circles, I don't know about the field shooting people. I have heard some reports of issues in regards to feeding, also the availability of brass may be an issue given the demand from the target shooting market (which could also be a plus). For the difference and simple availability, the WSM family is always good. Sure it might not have the neck length of the SAUM but it will do.

I found this article a while ago and it might shed some light on the topic:

The extra neck length is actually what makes this cartridge so interesting as the shorter hunting bullets if required will still be able to get close to the lands and have enough bullet grip from the case. As far as brass availability goes, People are able to find some pretty obscure calibers, I'm sure I can get it from somewhere. Also been there, done that with the WSM cartridges and am not interested in helping him work up loads for that caliber. I know alot of people love them, but it would be neat to build something different from everybody else. After all, variety is the spice of life

I just go with the sako line early 70 l61r 7mm rem. mag then it was the same barrel as the 375 H&H weight um this is no concern for me as take your time as you hunt

If your thinking 7mm SAUM, check out the 6.5 SAUM.

Lots of reading, but looks pretty good. Maybe all hype, I don't know.
Meets all of your criteria I think, plus if the hype is true it will do it on a short action and a 24inch barrel.

Last year built what I thought would be my last do all hunting rifle. It is a 7mm Rem Mag and I am pushing the 180 VLD @ 2900FPS with Retumbo and 26 inch barrel. This is why I think the 6.5 SAUM will be better:

  1. Wont give anything up in the wind to the 7mm 180, and will shoot flatter. (But I could get close to 3000FPS with 7mm if I wanted to which would tip the scales, but on the flip side I could also push the SAUM harder at the sacrifice of barrel life)
  2. Short action and -2" off the barrel will be about 3" shorter overall. Should handle much better.
  3. Less recoil means I can go with a lighter rifle, major bonus for sheep hunting.
  4. Great barrel life so I can shoot F-Open just for practice and not worry about it. (If the hype is true)
Obviously I am giving up quite a bit of energy, but the Sheep wont know the difference and from what I have seen in the snipers hide thread thread the Elk wont either.

The snipers hide guys are not pushing this to the limit due to barrel life, but If you don't care about barrel life it could really be a laser.

I am building one right now on a Pierce Titanium with Edge stock and Fluted #4 Lilja. Should be nice and light.

Again this could all be hype, but I guess I will find out.

AC Douglas just finished one last week for me. 6.5 GAP 4S is what Pacific Tool & Guage call the reamer. I went a bit heavier though. Had him put a new barrel on a Rem 700P LTR .300 SAUM I had. Went to 24" finished length barrel. I also sent him a Wyatt mag box. I can fit pretty much any bullet seated to the neck/shoulder junction in the Wyatt mag box.

x2 for 6.5 SAUM

weird you say lets make it simple befor 1980 long action 7mm rem mag. same barrel OD small hole 7mm not 375 DAAA !! were you even useing air then

32 rounds how is that That is way to many for any man or woman to be steady

That is some great info, I will have a look at this one. I hadn't heard of the 6.5SAUM before, This is where the expierienced wildcatters really start showing their cards. A 6.5 would be interesting. Are the bullets as "destructive", I know shot placement and all that jazz, as the 7mm's. I am guessing that the 6.5mm top out around 150grains. but then again they are probably going at 3200fps.

I though this thread had dies, thanks guys for still breathing life into it.

Mrak, the 32 rounds were fired over the day. Settled on a 180 Barnes ttx @2850 , holding 3/4 min groups. Like I said no fun. It now gets fired 2-5x/yr.

Nevaneven, the 6.5s are worth the look. I'm shooting a 6.5x55 tikka t3 with 130 gr ttx. Hits with authority. Whatever you choose source out the lightest component you can. If you look after the ounces the pounds will look after you.
