Hello all,

I want to do more research on the types of long range iron sights used in precision rifle competitions and the like, however I've found literature on them very elusive to find so far. The only place I've found that sells sights for these distances is marstar, I can't even find the names of manufacturers let alone reviews or other dealers.

What are some of the main manufacturers of these types of sights, who sells them, and where can I learn more about them? This post is basically a fishing expedition, hoping to learn something useful and/or get directions to a good source of information. From where I'm sitting right now the only other source for one besides marstar would be buying a used rifle that already has them installed.

Fullbore or smallbore?

In fullbore the commom makes are Warner, Central, Tracker, RPA, Parker Hale, AJ Parker.

Some would say Redfield, but I don't.

I have some of each if you wnat to buy one.
 
I was talking about fullbore, but honestly I could use information about smallbore sights as well. I'm using mossberg target sights on my current smallbore, but I can't even find those on mossberg's inventory!
 
Actualy, Ganderite is more knowledgeable than Sinclair on Fullbore, having won the Gold Cross at Bisley and also was in the ammo business for years.

Warner makes a great sight, as does Brindle.

Alan's sights are excellent, widely used by US competitors. Don't know if any have Vernier scales, though.
 
Warner does have vernier now, I helped him design the scales. They can have right or left hand threads, Commonwealth is clockwise-up-right, USA is opposite. The non-vernier sights are as easy to read as the vernier version but you need to learn how. I would recommend the vernier however. Warner sights are easily the best there is because they are the best made.
 
Centra also has fine front sights including the new 60mm Goliath.

The GB Rifle Team use RPA and it's hard to argue with success and Range Sports carries them. Ian, do you carry the Warner?

Thank you for the replies so far gentlemen, I'm still at the stage where I'm not familiar with what features I should be looking for or what the differences are between makes. Who are the knowledgeable dealers in Canada aside from Sinclair International? Or are these items usually ordered direct from manufacturer?

Ganderite is not a dealer nor did he say that he was; he is an experienced shooter, and he happens to have various sights on hand.

I had a look at Sinclair's online catalog. They don't seem to have a great deal in the way of sights. They have a decent selection of accessories (eyepieces, shade tubes etc), service rifle sights, but the one and only precision rearsight I saw was a CG Centra (good sight BTW):

In Canada you could try Paul Reibin of Range Sports Unlimited. He doesn't have a web page but his phone is (250)372-7030.

I started shooting with a "Central" sight, which is made in Australia. It cost me $225 in 1993, I don't know about current availability new in Canada. They were on of the most common sights in Canada you can usually find a used one as part of a use target rifle setup or on its own for $150 or less. The earlier models had 1/3-minute clicks, the later models 1/4-minute clicks. They are lightweight and they are a good sight. You need to know how to read a vernier scale (easily learned and actually quite an elegant system).

In the late 1990s I bought a Warner rearsight, they are made in New Hampshire. As well as being a first-rate sight they are darn near a piece of manufacturing art and are simply a joy to use and to work with. My version (he calls it a "#2 Euro" version, this means that is has a right-hand thread on the leadscrews) now sells for (yikes) $570 and the vernier version for $670. This makes it one of the more expensive rear sights on the market, but if you can afford it I can honestly say it is worth the price.

I don't know if you are a lefty but there are several manufacturers who make left-handed versions of their sights.
