Okay, I dunno about you but when I was in 1PPCLI, I was not a good shooter (Marksman 1st class with FNC1A1). Hence I was passed over for any further shooting enrichment. The powers that be promoted me to Driver Track M113A1 and that was the limit of my shooting training in the Battalion.
So when I began my University studies I wanted to know more about precision shooting, but when local experts told me that my #### would fall off if I ever buy a prepared Sniper Notebook from shooting schools like Blackwater or Storm Mountain Tactical.
I wanted to keep my #### on my person
So here I am shooting at NSCC/ CFSAC, I needed a notebook that could be slipped in and out of my shooting ruck, a '64 Pattern Rucksack C2, Jump rucksacks they call them now in the battalions.
I did not want to pay hundreds of dollars for commercially prepared sniper logbooks since they had too many columns and rows to record a myriad of confusing wind tables and elevation charts to put your VLD Molycoated Hyper dollar bullet on the moon. I was confused and I did not want anybody else reminding me that my #### would fall off.
I found a pile of half size binders (3 rings: easy insertion and removal) at the CanEx in CFB Boredom for $ 7.99 . I noticed that these binders were the EXACT same size binders that our IT Department (Computer geeks) were throwing out. They had titles like : Lotus 1-2-3, WordPerfect4, dBase4. So I grabbed as many of these small binders before they ended up in the landfill. The IT guys asked me what I found so attractive about the small half sized binders and I told them that they made fabulous Sniper Notebooks.
In other words, STFU!!
I needed a cover. Bought some 1000 Denier Cordura from Mountain Equipment Coop (ww w.MEC.ca) when I was down at the Toronto, King Street Store. The Granola eating, Birkenstock wearing staff member was cutting the Cordura (black colour, of course). He asked what I was making up with this Cordura. I replied, "Sniper notebook covers, for tree hugging activists to protest the French Nuclear testing in the Queen Charlottes". That'll learn him to keep up with current events.
On my sewing machine, I cut and sewed up a bunch of notebook covers by wrapping the cordura around the closed binder. Tried one or two that way for fitting. Then I made a 3rd with pen slots. Then I made the 4th prototype with my nametag taken from my combats or ww w.canadianpeacekeeper.com. Then I made a 5th prototype with a nametag , penslots, and canadian flag. Way cool !!
I gave away the prototypes along with the binders to shooting friends. Great karma ! Free beer, because they know that 'Hungry does not drink.' Bastards...
And I kept the final prototype for my practice notebook, this records any lessons learned and other positive reminders during any practices at my home range.
While electronically shopping at Wheeler's Peacekeeper.com site, I found that he made a halfsize binder cover for all of $ 15.00 a few years back. Came with penslots and velcro'ed covers. Cool, I bought a couple in OD and black. My wife loves the black version. Then here I am on a Lt. Crse in Trenton, I was at an Orders group and I busted out the OD notebook covered half size binder. All the other officers backed away in the presence of a real sniper (yah, right I'm an Azkrakistan Wannabe)... LOL... I told them it was my wife's and she's the real sniper. ROTFL.
Then I designed a layered (cut in half, get 2 pages of sniper data) table, lines, rows, columns to fit my game (Sniper matches 61-65 CFSAC) requirements. This is the fun, creative part YOU can design to fit YOUR game). I printed a bunch of them, cut them and hole punched the babies to fit into my half size software binder.
Took the entire notebook to a sniper match in Connaught back in 1999. That summer it rained one afternoon and everything was soaked.... lesson learned: Printer paper is NFG in the rain.
So I Google searched "Rite in the Rain" and found a dealer in Oregon who sold letter sized (8.5" x 11") waterproof paper. 100 sheets for $ 15.00. Once I recieved that letter sized box of 100 sheets, I fed them through an undisclosed photocopier. My sniper sheets were printed and I cut them in half, hole punched them and now my sniper notebook (custom designed) was my own creation.
Lessons Learned:
1) my #### did not fall off
2) designing your own custom sniper sheets or service Rifle sheets is fun
3) finding half size binders in a dumpster is even more fun than buying at CanEx
4) The Operational Shooting Assoc patches we give out at our matches fit the spine of the sniper notebook. Extra Cool Factor.
5) Wheeler's w ww.canadianpeacekeeper.com covers work well, Cadpat,too.
6) Even more fun to giggle when other snipers show you their $ USD 50.00 notebooks. And then you pull out your 'Hungry' inspired welfare approach custom notebook to gain more 'Cool Factor' since I'm not a rich mirror kommando with more expensive Patagucci kit than shooting experience.
I hope that this experience will inspire you to ensure yer #### don't fall off by creating your own sniper notebook instead of paying lots of aftertax dollars. Or maybe like me, you are sick and tired of privileged people showing off their expensive commercially prepared notebook/notebook covers, create yer own. Have more fun, make more mistakes, tell more silly stories in the butts.
Cheers all,
Barney
Enough typing, time for my 20 klik bike ride.... I'm too fat.
