So I am looking for an all purpose semi auto rifle. I have a budget of around 1500 to 2 k to start but I am willing to add some more$ and build/change what I get over time to make it what I really want if I have to. I don't really have room for a whole bunch of rifles so I would like to get one that does all the jobs I want it to do well. A tall order I know. I would like it to be capable of reaching out to 1000yards when I'm ready to shoot that far(targets). As well as some faster closer range shooting. I will also be hunting with it up to the size of buffalo. So far I have been shooting a 30-06 savage and doing quite well but I don't like the feel of the gun. I am much more comfortable with the feel of a tactical pistol grip and larger tactical forearm. I love the look and feel of the browning short trac hang stalker but would want a longer barrel and a more powerful round. 300win mag? 300wsm? 338wsm? Something like that. I was thinking of buying a browning safari and re stocking it but can't find a suitable stock. Could the hawg stalker be made to shoot 300wsm? And add longer barrel? Any other ideas? This would be so easy if ar's were not restricted here. Noreen bad news and call it done. I know I'd need to save up a bit more but it would be worth it!!

Don't short mag cartridges have issues feeding well? I was under the impression that they don't feed well. If somebody could confirm that it may be worth reconsidering caliber.

I had looked at the fnar and love it but I think I want more than a 308. Also wouldn't the ar variants be restricted? I want to hunt with it.

Buy a bolt action .300 Win Mag.

Too bad they didn't put the FNAR Match with the McMillan stock into production, sounds like it would have been just the ticket!

Your auto-loader, non-restricted options are pretty scarce in that price range, and caliber selection. A BAR alone in 300wm is likely going to eat up the best part of your 1500$ and is in reality a 2moa gun. Additionally if you want optics you are likely pushing north of 2k pretty easily.
You could just look at auto-loaders in say 300wm, which limits you to BARs, Benelli, Sauer, HK SLB2000 (now made by Haenel), Voere and thats about it I can think of quickly. Of these the only real match/sniper style rifles are Voere and the SLB2000. There is Arms Tech in the US who convert BARs into sniper rifles, but their costs are the highest, 8k. There were SLB2000s floating around for less than 1k, but you would need to then sink money into upgrading the rifle from the hunter model to the sniper version, and your budget will be toast again. The Benellis and BARs are the cheapest option, the Sauer 303 would be next, north of 3k, and the Voere above that, though again, voere does a 'tactical - sniper' version. One thing to remember about all the highly tuned precision semi-autos is that they are not really meant for roughhunting service, or 1000yds.
You can tune a BAR in 300wm and slap it in a Mcmillian A5 stock, etc etc, but the cost is going to be huge.
My humble recommendation, two rifles. A goodish 300wm bolt (savage etc) for longish range, and for hunting, a BAR. If you look around you might find a used one cheap. If you get each for a grand, you would almost hold your budget.

I am out of the semi rifles world for a while but when Clay will recieve my FNAR bull barrel 308, i am not letting it passing by me... JP.

Precision semi auto, word Precision. should not be used for Semi-autos

That is little proof. All that tells me is that a company decided to modify a rifle to get more accuracy out of it, and they may have succeeded. There is little information out there. A 35 year old $550 BAR is much different than the rifle you have there in that link. I have shot a few BAR rifles long trac, short trac, safari etc. They aren't that accurate in factory set up. It would take some work, as you have shown. That rifle isn't wearing a factory barrel, and it sure as hell isn't a factory stock. The BAR has a two piece stock which doesn't lend itself to precision work. The BAR is a fine hunting rifle, which is what it is intended to be and it certainly accurate enough for that.
