Just wondering what rifles are availible as 'take down' rifle's that would fit in with the precision theme of things. Accurate sporters would be acceptable. Need something that could be packed in a backpack or motorcycle luggage, cal .308 or larger... repeatable moa out to 300-400 would be nice.

Given your range requirements how about something that folds down to 26", that should give you a barrel of 14-16". In .308 that should be enough to get you to 400. Google image "choate folding sniper", that should work nicely.

Blaser R93 (and probably the newer R8 as well).

The accuracy you are seeking, fantastic trigger, totally modular design, superfast straight pull action, interchangeable barrels/bolt heads/left- or right-bolts. Not only is the accuracy there, but you can take the gun down in seconds, including removing the scope/mount, and then quickly reassemble it and have no discernible shift in your POI.

Not exactly classic, but the most outstanding pure hunting rifle I have ever owned or shot, and more "precise" than a lot of "precision" guns.

I've never even seen one of the Blaser LRS2 tactical/precision rigs, but its a safe bet that they are outstanding as well, with all of the above features in a more purpose-built accuracy package.

If properly bedded, just take the action out of the stock.

Makes for a compact rifle that holds zero when installed.

My FTR was 1 click out at 600yds after taken apart to dry out from a Chilliwack drenching.

It is not what you are thinking about BUT do think about it.....

What could you do to protect the trigger assembly when out of the stock? Just in case it's in a hiking bag or worse and taken on a hike while apart. This would be a great trick too for shipping rifles to be worked on.

unstableryan- the price is the killer part. Only adds a cm or two to the length of the action when folded.

A sensable solution for sure, will have to play around with some of my rifle's and see how it works out. I don't mind slinging one over my sholder, just get quite a few look's in town, stopping for gas ect. If I could get down under 19" that would be sweet, as it would fit in my luggage nicely.

Small plastic container, rivet a velcro strap to it.

Contour to fit the action and voila, protected.

I know take apart rifles have been around since men have had rifles. They almost always involve an interface near the receiver.

And they all have some change in zero. Even if it is small, there is one

By separating the stock, all the important bits get to stay aligned and intact. Makes for a lighter less complicated package to boot.

I am about to venture into airline travel to get to F class matches (driving just eats too much time and money). For now, I have the big honking case but am looking into personal luggage that I can modify to ship rifles this very way.

Getting the rifle to like 36" saves a bundle in extra luggage costs. The rifle case is extra luggage AND overlength - yikes, pricey, pricey, pricey

But what happens when you arrive and get limited sight in time?

I know that my rifles go back together and are close enough that the first sighter is worthwhile.

See if any of these break down manf will give you a MOA guarantee for 1000yds?

Simple enough for any shooter with a properly bedded rifle to test. Two bolts and 1 minute of your time. It will either work or not.

If not, fix the bedding until it does...
