Got back from the range today and would like to share some results on the latest rebuild project. Got pretty excited I must say.
This is a post for those keeping their tent stakes around collecting dust and pineing away with what to do with them. I took my target barrel off my F class varminter rig some time ago. The barrel has some excessive pitting 2" in front of the chamber and has lost its flaire for 1/3 to 1/5 moa. So off to the hunting grounds it would go. My goals were to have a solid 3 shot gun for hunting.
The heavy varmint contour was turned down to a heavy sporter with patience and skill by Gunrunner8 here on CGN. I cleaned out the barrel channel on the package Savage 111 plastic stock to satisfy the larger contour barrel.
Gunrunner8 left enough meat for a rechamber into the future. I wanted to keep the chamber for fire forming and a hunter for now. I spun the barrel on the weekend, head spaced to 0 and set the locking nut home. Took my pre-loaded 129gr pills for a test run to see what happens (these loads were developed for the target barrel.) Sighted in 2" high at 100m and let er rip......
Stats and Mods.
The rifle is not bedded at this time. Front and rear action screws set at 30 inch pounds.
Savage 111 donor action and plastic stock with clip.
Timney trigger installed to a crisp sub 1.5lb.
McGowen Prefit, 8 twist, cut and recontoured to 25" with recessed crown. Kudos on a great job to Gunrunner8
3x9x40 Bushnell optics for hunting. Groups shot with 9 power.
Win brass, BR2 primer, I4350 powder under a 129gr Hornady Spire Point, 20 thou jump. Chrony 3020fps with ES of 2 for 3 shots
10mph wind, erratic.
Groups shot at 200m. 2-3 shot aggregate group shot back to back. Results: 1.304" average or 0.65 MOA. Which is equal to the last grouping I completed when it was still a 28" target barrel.
Yup..pretty pleased with the result so far.
Next on the list will be to first load tune the hunting load to see if I can make any improvements on this.
Then I will bed the barrel nut area. Will keep you posted..
