Predator gun

Stevens 200 - $350 plus taxe @ cabelas
Redfield scope - $209 plus tax @ wholesale sports
scope rings and bases $30- $100

optics will be more important.Best to have a higher quality used scope than a cheaper new one.I would go with the best optics I could.
Any brand of rifle will be more than accurate enough with good optics.

Get a Marlin XS7 in 243, or an XL7 in 25-06 or 270 and never look back. I have them all, and they regularly shoot handloads under an inch. Any one of them will be fine for coyotes, and be enough for deer and bear, too.

As well, they have a far better trigger than the Stevens, and a real recoil pad. :D

Did the XS7 Marlins have quality problems like their recent lever guns?

So, I looked up the regs..

"You may not possess a rifle greater than 400 ft/lbs of muzzle energy in an open big game season"

"A person hunting small game... may not use a caliber of .275 or greater"

What a pain in the a$$ Southern Ontario is eh!! I would have a look at the Savage line for a decent priced .223, maybe the MODEL 11F. It's around 500 to 600 and comes with a detachable magazine and Accutrigger which is a nice feature to have. Then Maybe top it off with a nice used Burris Fullfield II for about $200, good scope with nice glass for a good price.

That's been most of the negative comments I've read about the Axis, is about the trigger.
Having the ability to adjust it, would be quite nice.

The ones I have are all A+ rifles with no problems.

As per those regs, don't you just love Ontario! :D

I don't have anywhere to really try it out (Maximum .22LR or 12 gauge area)
But if you know anyone who has an open field, we could definitely try something.

The thompson looks pretty good, comes with a case, too!

I know of some places we can shoot if you make it out this way. If you are heading out, try to give me a few days notice so I can get something set up.

i have a savage axis for the price and scope not to bad at all. the trigger everyone says it is to heavy, but for me i like it that way but if you can get a savage axis with the accu trigger for your liking then in time save up and go bigger and better for a scope.

Well, maybe I'm being a bit weird, I really like the trigger on my No.4 mk1 Lee Enfield, some say it's hard, but I find it to be... Perfect.
But, being an amateur shooter, I'd probably never notice a difference.

Where abouts are you Located?
My girlfriend may drag me up to Sarnia in a month, her friends dad is an avid hunter, so he might be able to take me out.
Other than that, the last time I ventured North in Ontario was to London, to work on an stamping press.

Go with a .223. Ammo is by FAR the best priced and highest availability of any predator cartridge. I just picked up a box of hollow point Hornady shells for $22/50 rounds that shoot a clover leaf group out of my .223. That count be beat.

Here's my Savage 10 xp in .223. Came with a Bushnell 4-12x scope which i find to be decent. It will probably be replaced with a 6-24x at some point but matching up the camo will be a PITA.
A bit hefty but a good shooter and I find predator hunting to be a sitting game. Detachachable mag.

Made in N.A. I got it from Cabelas canada for a bit over $700 I think.

Here's an economical predator rig that I put together. It's a Remington 700 ADL Synthetic (predessesor of the SPS) chambered in .223 Rem. It's topped with a Burris Full Field II 4.5x14 in Leupold mounts. The bipod is on/off depending whether I'm using shooting sticks or not. This rig loves el cheapo Winchester white box 45gr HP's and I've taken coyotes out past 300 yards with this ammo. In winter it may even sport a bit of snow camo-tape if I'm in the mood ;)...

Nice setup, have you had any troubles with the 700?

Well, if you consider groundhogs "predators" and beans & hay the "prey" :) here is my new Savage;

Kidding aside, it's going on it's first coyote hunt tomorrow so hopefully, it will be more than a groundhog hunter by this time tomorrow. As for the model~it really intrigued me, and I read great things about the Savage 10. Already had accutrigger experience with my rimfires, and like the fact that this gun has the accustock and a detatchable mag. Really pleased with the accuracy I'm getting with it, and look forward to some range time in the coming months. (starting it's life as a hunter)
