I have a vx3 2.5-8x36 on my .223. I think it weighs 12oz. Great scope for that calibre. As many have said, 3-9 is quite adequate. Nice to have ~3x at the bottom, and I use that a lot more than 8x at the top. That said, I haven't shot fur beyond 300yd with it and I have been getting a lot of opportunities at 450-500yd. I am considering the purchase of a higher power scope, but not for .223. I do not endorse use of the .223 at these distances. At 400yd, that cartridge is the equivalent of a .22lr. Considering the low energy, questionable bullet performance, and sensitive windage at that distance my ethics put the limit around 300. I'm sure you will have fun with 8-32x, especially punching paper, but if you find I t's too much magnification, consider another monarch. i really like having twin optics - I use my .223 as a trainer, set it up to match my main hunting rifle as closely as possible. Not only does this make practicing much more affordable, it provides a backup scope should one ever fail.
