I know one should practice shooting at various distances, but invariably, do you find yourself returning to a specific distance?

I know I like to shoot at 10 meters most of the time, going out to 25 maybe only 10% of the time. I read an article that indicated something like 56% of law enforcement related shootouts in the US occur within a distance of 5 feet and 94% occur within 10 yards, so I figure that (10) is a pretty good distance to practice at snapping and faster shooting whereas I have to take much more time to hit a small target at 25.

Opinions?

Thats an interesting question......Im the pistol director of our gun club in Port McNeill and we are currently awaiting Bob Turpell to come up and do his final inspection on our pistol range. A few of our members requested us to have our range built for 50 meters. We measured 50 meters and put a pistol target up. My tired eyes had a hard time seeing that far  Ideally we want Bob to approve us for a 35 meter range.
When my dad and i shoot, were at about the 15 meter range. So for me its comforting to know that many of my fellow shooters on this forum shoot within the 15 meter mark.

10 to 25 meters is where I spend most of my time. I don't practice much at shorter distances as the look at the target and shoot method works fairly well (for me anyway).

Shooting longer distances (20-50 meters) is a great challenge with a pistol, but I'd tend to do it prone or supported with a great deal of time taken to shoot. That's not really my thing. If I'm going to shoot at that distance, I'd rather just use my rifle. I prefer to focus my pistol practice on CQB situations.

The only reason I can see for having a dedicated pistol range out to 50m is for PPC and Bulls Eye competition. Silhouette shooters generally use a rifle range anyway, and tactical guys are normally more interested in 0-15 yrds, if you're practising 'defensive style' shooting at 50m with a pistol, there's a hitch in your game plan.

50 meters is fun to shoot with pistol. For those who question if anything could be hit at that distance I must say - practice. My most used distance is 25m for ISSF type BE shooting. 15m is so short of a distance I can't believe people actually bother looking at sigths, one should train to shoot at 15m from a hip. If you miss- just walk your POI onto a target and remember the hold of a gun. With the amount of practice average shooter does carefully alining sights and still missing the paper one could easily develop strong point/reflex shooting technique. My 2c

Depends what you want to do, target shoot, or play some form of IPSC / SASS game.
I use the entire range if it does not get in anyones face:D
range is not a factor or used as a ref. size of objects are more important, and one or maybe a double tap on targets that pose a greater danger to you.
Better targets than on stands are small pizza boxes tossed on the backstop.
You get instant visual feedback , when that round hits the sand. And for all out running and shooting , its perfect , your follow up shots are on the money, and a bonus , you find yourself using your sights less and less, just become more of 2 ways , gap shooting, basic sight pic front of barrel to tgt. The second is pure instinct(ZEN) your mind collects the data, and with much practice you just pick a spot on the tgt, up and let loose.:D

Is there s specific discipline you are practicing for? I practice everything from 5 to 50 meters (IPSC), but the largest portion of it is generally between 10 and 20 meters. I usually try to work in a couple of groups at 25 to 50 if the situation permits. Preferably at the end of the session so I know my sights are confirmed for next time, and letting me finish the day with a nice, serene "positive imprinting" sort of exercise.

Interesting. I've yet to get involved in IPSC, but I guess the competition shooting has targets out as far as 25 yards. So do you slow down in the middle of the shoot to try to hit this target as well as possible?

IPSC matches competitors should expect to see targets at all distances out to 50 meters. At any given distance you shoot only as fast as you can see what you need to see in order to make that specific shot. So yes, the speed or cadence will vary according to the difficulty of the shot.
