Bought a 'meh why not' Tokarev tt33 during this last chance frenzy. It's one of many, definetly won't be my primary at the range.

What ammo are you having luck with? I see there's some deals on surplus ammo, but I have no experience with surplus ammo or this gun.

Surplus runs just fine ... it's just sparky and corrosive as all hell.
S&B 7.62 Tok runs well but isn't super common
PPU 7.63 Mauser ran well but is not very common and prices have gone up from 34 a box to 45 a box in the last 2 years
Norinco commercial ammo ran well as well just very sparkly

The ones I had would shoot anything, except that czech stuff that comes on stripper clips.

I don't/won't buy that anymore

The Czech stuff on stripper clips, and came in the brown box with black hinges, 2280 per crate and marked TT33 worked very well in the pistols. It was only offered at Lever Arms for about 3 months, before it was all sold out.

The stuff in the ''green'' painted boxes was much hotter but didn't break anything.

The stuff marked "TT33" worked very well in C96 Mauser broomhandles, with upgraded spring kits from Wolf.

Chez BXN 50's ammo on stripper clips is the hottest type of its kind. 1750 fps on average, out of my tok.
Its accurate, however if you plan on shooting serious amount of it, few things need to be considered.
Pistols that Russia made during WW2 should not be subjected to this ammo, as those pistols are hand made by malnourished children.
Since its steel case it will reduce service life of the pistol.
Therefore please buy matching post war gun or any comblock country that made them.
Chinese made are the best on par toks that last fair bit with this ammo.
My Chinese pistol lasted for about 9k. Until it developed slide crack with recoil guide buffer and all it lasted about twice as its stated in manual of 2k rounds.
So for collectors piece or something else other than postwar tok use brass cased ammo.

I have chronoed every type of Czech Surplus there is with a Labradar backed up by a Caldwell G2. Two type 54 and a Polish gun all do 1600fps +/- . I had one batch that did 1550. It's very hot stuff but I have handloads that beat that by quite a bit. My one Type-54 also ate 3000 rounds of it without issue. I only ever cleaned the gun three times too, no rust. That's not to say others will get away with it...

As far as commercial SB is hottest, Winchester x25 is produced by SB and is identical in performance. PPU is pretty slow at barely 1400fps. Norinco comes in at 1450. That's all I can recall off the top of my head. The PPU JHP load claims 1700+fps but I really doubt that. I have never had the chance to buy some to test.
